GEORGE WESTCOMBE THE LATE MR. GEORGE WESTCOMBE On Friday,December 21', the remains of Mr. George Westcombe, of Sevenoaks, were conveyed to Newbury and laid to rest in the family grave in the Cemetery. It was only a week before his death that serious symptoms appeared, and an operation was found to be immediately necessary. The shock proved too great for the system, and he passed away on Monday evening December 17th.
In early years Mr. Westcombe was associated with his late father in the Brewery in Bartholomew-street, and on his father's death took over, with his brother, the late Mr. J.E. Westcombe, the management of the business. Subsequently he removed to Sheffield, and resided there for a short period in 1888. In recent years, in consequence of impaired health, he has lived in quiet retirement in Sevenoaks, taking active interest, as his health permitted, in the work of the Wesleyan Church there.
He leaves a widow and daughter and son. His elder son, Mr. Eric Westcombe, who joined the army immediately on the outbreak of war, was killed on the first attack on the Vimy Ridge in May, 1915. The funeral took place on December 21st, the interment being in the family vault at Newbury Cemetery. The Rev. J. Peel, superintendent Wesleyan minister, officiated.
The mourners were Miss Westcombe (daughter), Rev. J. Westcombe, Mr. A.B. Westcombe (brothers), Mrs. Higgs, Mrs Bradfield (sisters), Mr. Bradfield (brother-in-law), Miss Gladys Bradfield, Mr. Ernest Bradfield (of Stockbridge), Mr. G.H. Westcombe (nephew), Mr. and Mrs. Westcombe (cousins).
Floral offerings were not desired beyond the family circle but a beautiful wreath and cross where received from Mrs westcombe widow and family, the brothers and sisters of the deceased
