Charles Cutler

1854-1933

Charles, his parents, siblings and early life:

Charles was born in 1854, he was baptised on the 28^th May 1854 in North Hayling, Southampton, Hampshire, the son of William (a Carpenter) and Ellen Cutler (nee Rogers) who were married on the 3^rd October 1839, in North Hayling.

Charles’s father Wiliam was baptised on the 13^th January 1813, in South Hayling, Hampshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah Cutler (nee Snow) who were married on the 9^th January 1806, in Littleton, Hampshire. (Thomas was from South Hayling)

Charles’s  mother Ellen was baptised on the 20^th March 1814, in South Hayling, Hampshire, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Rogers (nee Rogers) who were married on the 13^th February 1809, in South Hayling.

William and Ellen also had the following children (all born in Hampshire):

Edmund, born 1842, in North Hayling

Thomas, born1845, in Catherington (died 1845)

Henry Foster, born 1846, in Catherington

Alfred John, born 1849, in Horndean, Catherington

In 1841 William (25), a Carpenter, Ellen (25) and their son George (6 months), were living in North Hayling, Hampshire.

The 1851 census records William (38) a Wheelwright & Carpenter, Ellen (37) and their sons, George Rogers (10), Edmund (8), Henry (4) and Alfred (1), were living in Horndean, Catherington, Hampshire.

In 1861 Charles (7) was living in North Hayling, with his father William (48), a Carpenter, his mother Ellen (47) and his siblings, Alfred (12), Frederick (8) and Amy (4).

Charles in later life:

In 1871 Charles (16) was working as an Apprentice Grocer, at 34 Wish Street, Landport, Portsea, Hampshire, for a Grocer, George Shotter. (Surname recorded as Cutter on ancestry)

(Kate was born in Newbury, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 10^th July 1859, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Reuben and Elizabeth Taylor (nee Harris), who were married on the 6^th March 1837, in Newtown, Hampshire).

The 1881 census records Charles (26), a Grocer and Draper and Kate (22) living at a Grocer’s Shop in Wokingham Road, Sonning, Berkshire.

Charles and Kate had the following two children, born in Newbury, Berkshire:

Ernest Reginald born c1891, (baptised on the 26^th January 1891, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Charles (a Traveller) and Kate Cutler, of The Retreat, Berkley Road, Newbury)

In 1891 Charles (36) was working as a Grocer’s Assistant, living at 2 Morecombe Villas, Newbury, with Kate (32), Kate (9), Ernest (3 months) and a servant. (Surname recorded as Cutter on ancestry)

By 1901 Charles (46), Kate (41), Kate (19) and Reginald E. (10) were living at “The Prince of Wales Hotel” Didcot, Berkshire. Charles was the licensed victualler.

By 1911 Charles (56) was back working as a Grocer’s Assistant, living in Roker, Horseshoe Road, Pangbourne, Berkshire, with Kate (52) and their son, Ernest Reginald (20), a G.W.R. Railway Clerk

The 1921 census records Charles (67), now unemployed, living in Horseshoe Road, Pangbourne, with Kate (62), their daughter-in-law, Matilda M. Cutler (32), their grandson, Ernest Charles Cutler (2) and three boarders.

Charles and Kate continued to live together in Horseshoe Road, Pangbourne until Kate’s death in 1930.

Kate died aged 71 in Pangbourne. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29^th December 1930.

Charles died aged 79 in 1933, at 54 Broadwater Road, Worthing, Sussex, the home of his widowed daughter Kate Shacklock. His body was brought to Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4^th December.
