Elizabeth Twitchin/Twitchen

Elizabeth was baptised on the 8th April 1798, in Compton Berkshire, the daughter of Richard and Mary Street.

Richard and Mary also had a son, William, baptised on the 27th September 1795, in Compton.

Elizabeth married Joseph Twitchin on the 16th April 1826, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

(Joseph was baptised on the 13th July 1796, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the son of Richard and Ann(e) Twitchin (nee Cumner) who were married on the 11th October 1778, at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Richard was recorded as a Sojourner))

Joseph and Elizabeth had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

George, 8th April 1827 (died aged 6 months, buried 17th September 1827, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Joseph, 25th July 1828

George, 19th September 1830 (died aged 4, buried 7th November 1834, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Eliza, 17th June 1832

Richard William, 23rd October 1836

Mary Ann, 30th November 1838

Sophia, 10th October 1841

(All surnames recorded as Twitchin).

Elizabeth’s husband Joseph was a Bargeman. He does not appear to be recorded in either 1841 or 1851 census records

The 1841 census records Elizabeth Twitchins (40) as a Laundress, living in Hatchet Yard, Market Place, Newbury, Berkshire, with her children, Eliza (9), Richard (4) and Ann (2) (Mary Ann).

The 1851 census records their daughter Ann Twitchen (12) (Mary Ann) living in Cheap Street, Newbury. The census entry also records “Parents on River in Barge”

Elizabeth was widowed in 1851, Joseph died aged 54, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th May.

The 1861 census records Elizabeth Twitchin (63) living in Church Almshouses, Newbury.

Elizabeth Twitchen died aged 77, in 1866, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th March.
