Biographical Information

The articles below contain information about Richard Percy.

Richard Percy (1796 – 1863)

Richard Percy (1796 – 1863)

Ann Percy (1799 – 1877)

Richard Percy married Ann Duck on 20 May 1825 at St Mary in Speen. Richard was probably baptized on 3 January 1796 at St Mary in Speen, although his age recorded at burial implied that he was born 1798.

Richard and Ann had two children who were both baptized at St Mary in Speen, George Peover on 17 May 1827 and Henrietta on 3 January 1830.

By the time of the 1841 census Richard and Ann had moved away from Newbury and they were recorded in Marylebone workhouse along with their children George and Henrietta. Richard was a school teacher.

Subsequently in the 1851 census the family was not living together. Ann was recorded as an inmate in Abingdon workhouse and her occupation was a nurse. Son George was recorded as a lodger in Cheap Street in Newbury with his uncle Henry Keene. George was a currier, as was his uncle Henry who employed 2 men. Daughter Henrietta was living in the school house in Englefield and was a schoolmistress. No trace of Richard. It is possible Richard was in a workhouse where very often initials only were recorded and not full names.

Ten years later in the 1861 census Ann was still an inmate of Abingdon workhouse and working as a nurse. As in 1851 no trace of Richard in the census.

Richard died on 20 May 1863 aged circa 64 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 25 May.

Ann was recorded as a lodger in Speen in the 1871 census, her occupation was recorded as retired upon superannuation.

Ann died on 19 February 1877 aged 77 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 23 February.

George Peover Percy, son of Richard and Ann was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 13 May 1899 aged circa 72. His wife Harriett Mary and six of his daughters were also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery.
