Albert Soper

1857-1862

Albert Henry Soper was born in Newbury he was the son of George & Sarah Soper (nee Prouting).

Albert’s father was a Tailor, he married twice, his 1st wife was Ann Cumbler, they married in Newbury in 1844 and had two daughters, Lucy Ann born c1846 and Charlotte born in 1847.

In 1851 the family were living in Kimber’s Yard Newbury.

Ann died aged 35 in 1851 she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26^th May.

George remarried in 1852 his 2^nd wife was Sarah Prouting (born Snelsmore 1829), they had the following children:

Albert’s brother Walter died shortly after he was born he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th March 1860.

His mother Sarah died aged 31 the following year she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25^th March 1861.

After his mother’s death his sisters Harriet aged 2 months and her sister Sarah aged 8 went to stay with their grandparents John & Eliza Prouting in Chieveley. Harriet died the month after her mother and was laid to rest on the 15th April 1861 at St Mary the Virgin Chieveley.

Albert, his father George and siblings Charlotte, Elizabeth and Edward were living in Caroline Place Newbury in 1861.

Albert died aged 4 in 1862 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28^th May

In 1871 George was living in Hazell’s Yard. He died aged 58 in 1880 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18^th December

George Soper was born circa 1822 in Newbury the son of Benjamin & Charlotte (nee Titcomb) Soper. After the death of Benjamin in September 1828 Charlotte remarried on 22 May 1831 at St Mary in Thatcham to Thomas Naylor. Charlotte was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 5 November 1872.
In the 1841 census George was recorded living in West Mills in Newbury with his mother Charlotte & stepfather Thomas Naylor, step sister Martha & a servant Ann Cumbler. Thomas was recorded as a paper maker & George a tailor.

George married Ann Cumbler on 2 December 1844 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Ann was baptized 15 October 1815 at St Mary in Kingsclere the daughter of William & Anne.
In the 1851 census George & Ann with daughters Lucy aged five & Charlotte aged three were recorded living in Kimbers Yard in Newbury, with George a tailor journeyman.
Ann died very soon after the census and was buried 26 May 1851 at Newtown Road Cemetery.
George remarried in Q3 1852 in Newbury district to Sarah Prouting. Sarah was baptized 18 October 1829 at St Mary the Virgin in Chieveley to John & Eliza. In the 1851 census she was recorded as a general servant lodging in Northbrook Street in Newbury & the head of the house was a master tailor.
George & Sarah had a son Walter in 1960. He died March 1860 & was buried 16 March 1860 at Newtown Road Cemetery.
In March 1861 George's wife Sarah died and was buried 25 March 1861 at Newtown Road Cemetery. A few days later on 7 April 1861 in the 1861 census George with daughters Charlotte aged thirteen & Elizabeth aged six and sons Edward aged five & Albert aged three were recorded living in Staples Yard, Caroline Place in Newbury, with George a tailor & daughter Charlotte a servant.
George & Sarah's son Albert died May 1862 & was buried 28 May 1862 at Newtown Road Cemetery aged four.
In the 1871 census George & his son Edward were lodging in Bartholmew Street in Newbury with George a journeyman tailor & Edward an errand boy. George died 15 December 1880 at the Union Workhouse in Newbury and was buried 18 December 1880 at Newtown Road Cemetery. A short announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News of 23 December 1880.
