Malcolm was born in Kensington, London, the son of James, a Scottish Barrister and Anne Bowring nee Mardon, born in Enfield, Middlesex.
His family lived in the St Pancras district and he was a pupil at the Clewer House School, Windsor in 1861 with two of his brothers, David and Douglas.
Malcolm was an Architectural draughtsman and later, also a Joiner and Clerk for a Brewers in Newbury. He married Martha Day Sheerman in St John’s Church, Newbury on 22nd, February, 1876. Martha was born in 1849 in Whitway, Burghclere, the daughter of Robert and Mary nee Ashley. Robert was one of generations of the Sheerman family, who were Blacksmiths in the Burghclere district.
In 1881, Malcom, his wife and two sons, Archibald Sheerman Watson and Ernest Malcolm Watson were in Carnarvon Terrace and in 1891 his family lived in Rose Villa, St Mary’s Hill, Newbury (near the Axe and Compass public house). In 1911, they were in “Rheola”, Queen’s Road, Newbury and 2, Winchcombe Terrace, King’s Road, Newbury in 1920. Their sons were Musicians and Teachers of Music.
Malcolm was also known for his drawings, which were displayed in town and noted in the “Newbury Weekly News”
