Eliza, her parents, siblings and early life:

Eliza was baptised on the 29th November 1834, in Kingsclere, Hampshire, he daughter of Alexander (a Bricklayer’s Labourer) and Eliza Allen (nee Lee) of Kingsclere (near the Falcon)

Her father Alexander was baptised on the 23rd November 1806 in Kingsclere, the son of Ambrose (a Labourer) and Elizabeth Allen (nee Wickens) who were married on the 4th April 1796 in Kingsclere.

Her mother Eliza was baptised in 1811 in Wantage, Berkshire, the daughter of Edward and Priscilla Lay

Eliza and Alexander also had the following children:

Sarah, baptised 20th Sept. 1829

Frederick, born 9th Sept. baptised 30th Sept,1832

Ann c1836, baptised 10th Jan. 1837

Edward 1843, baptised 8th Jan, 1844

William c1846, baptised 2nd June 1846

Alfred, 1848 baptised as George 4th January 1849

Priscilla, baptised 10th March 1852

Maria, baptised 2nd July 1855

In 1841 Eliza (6) was living in North Street, Kingsclere, with her father Alexander (30), her mother Eliza (30), her siblings Sarah (11), Frederick (9), Ann (4) and her grandmother, Priscilla Lea (65).

The 1851 census records Alexander (44), Eliza (40), Frederick (18) a Bricklayer, Eliza (16), Ann (14), William (5) and George (2), living in George Street, Kingsclere.

Eliza in later life:

Marriage details:

Place: St Mary, Speenhamland, Berkshire.

Date: 19th February 1860

Groom: William Allen, bachelor, occupation, Miller

Bride: Eliza Allen, spinster

Fathers: George Allen, a Miller and Alexander Allen, a Bricklayer

Witnesses: Thomas Laugham and Charlotte Allen

(William was baptised on the 6th January 1833, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of George and Milicent Allen (nee Purdue) who were married on the 5th July 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury).

Eliza died aged 25, later that year. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd July 1860.

William after Eliza’s death:

The 1861 census records William (28) working as a Mill Servant, for Miller George Knight, in West Mills, Newbury.

In 1871 William (38) was working as a Carman, living in Ham Road, Greenham, Berkshire. His sisters Hannah (35), Emma (31) and Eliza (24), all Laundresses, were living with him.

William remarried in 1874, his 2nd wife was a widow, Mary Belcher (nee Chivers) (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Mary was baptised in 1847 in Speenhamland, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Jemima Chivers (nee Andrews), who were married in 1846 in Speen, Berkshire)

They had a daughter Jemima Millicent, born 24th July 1875

In 1881 William (44) was still working as a Carman, he was living in Kennet Place, Newbury, with Mary (34) and Jemima (5).

By 1891 William (53), a Carman, Mary (44) and Millicent (15) (Jemima Millicent) were living at 6 Shaw Road, Newbury.

The 1901 census records William (66), a Carman, Mary (53), a Laundress and Millicent (25), living at 6 The Crescent, Newbury. (The Crescent was known as Shaw Road in 1891)

William died aged 74 in 1907. He was buried in Speenhamland, Berkshire.
