John Haynes/Haines

1801-1859

John was born on the 16th September 1801, he was baptised on the 11th October 1801, in Thatcham Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Frances Haynes (nee Emmans) who were married on the 27th October 1792, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire.

Joseph and Frances also had the following children:

Giles Hains, baptised 23rd February 1794, in Bucklebury

Joseph Haynes, baptised 19th March 1797, in Thatcham

Joel Haines, baptised 22nd July 1798, in Thatcham

Job was baptised 24th February 1805, in Thatcham

 

John Haines married Sarah Webb on the 24th November 1839, in Thatcham, Berkshire (Fathers recorded as Joseph Haines and William Webb)

(Sarah was baptised on the 25th January 1818, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Susannah Webb (nee Watts) who were married on the 11th November 1805 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury).

John and Sarah and the following children:

Henry, baptised 11th April 1841 in Thatcham

Ann, born 1844

William born c1846 (died aged 13 months, buried 30th April in 1847, at St Nicolas Newbury)

Charles, c1849, baptised 25th March 1849, at St Nicolas Newbury (dad a labourer)

Fanny, c1851, baptised 30th March 1851, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Porter)

Elizabeth, born 1853 (died aged 6 in 1859, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th November)

Job 1855, baptised 25th November 1855, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a labourer)

Albert, 1858, baptised 23rd May 1858 (dad a Labourer) (died aged 5 months in 1858, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th October)

(Census records also record 2 other sons. John born c1833 and David born c1837. Two possible baptisms in Thatcham for these children record the parents as John and Sarah Haynes. These two children may have been from a previous marriage to John Haines and another Sarah or both born to Sarah (nee Webb) before her marriage to John).

In 1841 John (35) was recorded as an Agriculural Labourer, living in Benham Hill, Thatcham, Berkshire, with Sarah (35), John (8), David (4) and Henry (3 months) (surname Hains, but recorded as Harris on ancestry)

The 1851 census records John Haynes (49) as a Corn Porter, living in St Mary Hill, Newbury, with Sarah (33), John (18), David (14), Henry (10), Ann (6), Charles (2) and Fanny (1 month).

John Haines did aged 58 in 1859. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th November.

Sarah after John’s death:

The 1861 census records Sarah Hains (45) (recorded as Lark on ancestry) as a Laundress, living in West Field, Newbury, with her children, Ann (17), a Laundress, Charles (12), Fanny (10) and Job (5)

In 1871 Sarah Haines (56) was again recorded as a Laundress. She was living in The City, Newbury, with David (34), a Chelsea Pensioner and Charles (22), a Labourer.

Sarah remarried on the 25th August 1874 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. Her 2nd husband was widower, Richard Hazell.

Richard died aged 54 on the 14th March 1877.He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th March.

In 1881 Sarah (70) was recorded living with her married son Job (25) a Leather Salesman, her daughter-in-law Sarah (26) and her grandson Edwin T. Haines (3), at 11 Regent Street, Leicester.

The 1891 census records Sarah (76) living in Belgrave Leicester, with Job (35) a Leather Agent, his children Edwin (13), Lilian (6) and a boarder, Kate Sawbridge (Surnames recorded as Maines and Hayell on ancestry)

Sarah Hazel died aged 78 in 1893 in Leicester.
