HENRY DOLTON REF: 4909
Henry was born in Speenhamland in 1823 and was the 8th child of 11 born to Charles and Naomi Dolton. Charles was a Market Gardener and Seedsman who had 40 acres employing 6 men.
In 1841 Henry was 15 and living with his family in Speenhamland.
In 1849 Henry married Emma Thomas from Southampton (Ref: 5477) and, in 1851, they were living at St Mary’s Hill, Newbury with their 11-month-old daughter, Martha Naomi plus 2 servants. Henry was already building a successful business as a Corn Merchant and employing 3 men.
From 1861 to his death he lived with his family in the Wharf area of Newbury and, finally, at Kendrick House near the Wharf. He and Emma had 6 more children: Annie; Charles Henry (who followed him into the business); Rose Emma (Ref: 129) and Edith (Ref: 2503). Sadly, Frederick William (Ref: 8530) died aged 1 & Herbert George (Ref: 5152) died aged 4.
The business went from strength to strength and, around 1868, he became an Alderman and J.P. He was much respected and was also a religious man as a member of the Wesleyan Church – see Obituary.
Henry died on 4 November 1899 from heart failure and was buried on 8 November 1899. Probate was proved to members of his family at £23,376 0s 2d.
