Ormsby Edward was born in Kent, the son of John Ormsby and Sarah Culyer (nee Netherclift) who were married on the 25th February 1847, in Bray, Berkshire
His father John Ormsby was baptised on the 25th January 1818, at St Lawrence, Norwich, Norfolk, the son of William (a Chair Maker) and Maria Culyer (nee Smith) who were married on the 28th June 1812, at St Helen, Norwich, Norfolk. John was a Civil Engineer. In 1853 John was employed by Messrs. Rickon in Chatham Kent, who were erecting gasworks to supply gas to the parish of Gillingham. On Friday the 2nd December, works having been completed, the gasometer was filled with gas ready for lighting up the parish on the following (Saturday) night. On the Friday evening it was suspected that there was gas leaking from the gasometer and John and a workman named William Hall, went to investigate, incautiously taking a lit candle with them. When reaching the top of the gasometer, the gas was lit by the flame of the candle causing a massive explosion, killing both men.
