Herodias Ruddy

c1774-1853

Herodias was baptised on the 8th May 1774, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Paradise, who were married on the 28th August 1770, at St Nicolas, Newbury. (both were widowed, Sarah recorded as Sarah Wallbridge)

Thomas and Sarah also had the following two children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

Meriah, baptised 26th July 1771

James, born 24th April, baptised 25th October 1777

 

Herodias married Richard Ruddy on the 2nd September 1804, at St Martin-in-the Fields, Westminster, London.

(Richard was born c1765. He served in the Army. His discharge record on the 27th June 1809, records him as a Sergeant, aged 43).

Workhouse admission records record Richard, a Chelsea Pensioner and Herodias Ruddy entering the Westminster Workhouse on the 15th August 1835. They were discharged on the 18th April 1836.

Herodias was widowed in 1839, Richard died aged 74 (death registered in St Pancras)

The 1841 census records Herodias (65), a Female Servant/Shoe Binder, as an inmate in the Newbury Workhouse.

In 1851 she was also recorded as an inmate in the Newbury Workhouse, working as a Shoe Binder. (Christian name recorded as Haradias on ancestry)

 

Herodias Ruddy died aged 73, in 1853, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th February, as Herodias Radley
