Katherine Collins (1877 – 1917)
Katherine Wintle was born in 1877 in Newbury, the daughter of George and Ann, nee Flint, Wintle. George and Ann had married in 1875 in Newbury.
In the 1881 census Katherine was recorded with her parents and three sisters along with seven others at 10 Northbrook Street in Newbury, her father George was a draper employing 17 people. Katherine was still living in Northbrook Street (at numbers 10 and 11 now) in the 1891 census with her parents and eight siblings along with three apprentices and seven servants. Katherine was recorded as a scholar.
Ten years later in the 1901 census Katherine was living at 60 Hight Street in Gravesend and working as a draper’s assistant.
Katherine married Douglas Collins in 1903 in Paddington. Douglas was born in 1874 in Plumpton in Sussex.
Katherine and Douglas had three children, who were John Staunton born 1903 in Battersea, Mark Anthony born 1905 in Newbury and George Douglas born 1913 in Paddington.
In the 1911 census Katherine and Douglas were living in Maida Vale with sons John and Mark, Douglas was working as a surveyor’s assistant.
Katherine died on 13 February 1917 at 10 Northbrook Street in Newbury, the house of her parents. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 17 February.
Douglas continued to live in London, in the 1921 census he was living at 59 Elgin Cresent in Kensington with his sons Mark and George and was an auctioneer and valuer. He remarried later in 1921 to Dorothy Lucy Garfath. Douglas died 29 May 1929 still living at 59 Elgin Crescent.
