Eliza Purdue

Eliza, her parents, siblings and early life:

Eliza was baptised on the 18^th December 1831, in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, the daughter of George, a Chaise Driver (the driver of a two wheeled carriage called a chaise) and Elizabeth Chappell (nee Frape), of Newport, Gloucestershire, who were married in 1830 in Gloucestershire.

Her father George was baptised on the 10^th May 1805 in Old Sodbury, Gloucestershire, the son of John and Elizabeth Chappel. He died aged 34 in 1839 and was buried on the 18^th October in Old Sudbury.

Her mother Elizabeth was born c1803 in Gloucestershire the daughter of John and Ann Frape. Elizabeth died aged 74 in 1875. She was buried on the 13^th June 1875 in Hawkesbury.

George and Elizabeth also had the following children:

Martha born c1836, baptised 24^th July 1836, in Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire, (abode, Dunkirk, Gloucestershire, dad a Post Boy)

John Frederick born 1838, baptised 12^th August 1838, in Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire, (abode Petty France, Gloucestershire, dad a Post Boy)

The 1851 census records Eliza (19) as a General House Servant, at The Hall, Quorndon, Leicestershire.

The 1861 census records Eliza (29) as an Upper Housemaid at Skeffington Hall, Skeffington, Leicestershire.

(Edmund was a Carpenter. He was baptised on the 21^st May 1823, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of George & Mary Purdue (nee Cook) who married on the 5^th February 1823 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. He married his 1^st wife, Ann Everest in 1845, in Newbury. They had the following children: Edmund and Ann had the following children: David William Everest born 1840 (Ann’s illegitimate son), Edmund,1845 (died 1847), William George, 1846, Henry, 1850, Alfred 1852 (died 1856) and Mary Ann, 1854 (died 1855). Edmund was widowed in 1862)

Eliza gave birth to a stillborn child in 1865. This child was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1^st July.

The family were recorded living in Railway Terrace, Newbury in 1871, 1881 and 1891.

Edmund died aged 77 in 1900 in Newbury. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1^st November.

The 1901 census records Eliza living in Railway Terrace with her youngest two sons Arthur and John.

The 1911 census records Eliza (79) living with her son Thomas and his family at Cromer, Bradville Road, West Drayton Middlesex.

Eliza died aged 85 on the 18^th December 1916 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23^rd December (at the time of her death she was recorded living at 4 Pleasant Place St John’s Road Newbury).
