Emma Robinson

Emma, her parents, siblings and early life:

Emma was born in London, the illegitimate daughter of Amelia Assig (nee Pearton), the widow of Augustus De Assig (surname also recorded as Assig and Deassig).

Emma’s mother Amelia Pearton was born c1796, in Soho, Westminster. She had the following illegitimate children (presumably with her partner Augustus Assig as all three baptisms record him as their father, an Army Officer):

Evelina Pearton, born 19^th April 1822, baptised 19^th October 1834, at St John the Evangelist, Westminster

Augustus Pearton, born September 1823, baptised with Evelina, on the 19^th October 1834

Wilhelmina, born 28^th March 1826, baptised 26^th April 1826, at St James Westminster

On the 1^st December 1826 Augustus was recorded as a prisoner in Marshalsea Prison in Southwark (mainly a debtors’ prison)

Emma married Augustus Assig on the 26^th April 1827, at St Mary, Lambeth.

 Augustus Deassig died aged 39 the following year and was buried on the 29^th August 1828, at St Margaret, Westminster.

After her husband’s death Emma had another daughter, Josephine, born c1828, baptised on the 21^st May 1834, at St James, Picadilly

In 1851 Emma (15) was working as a Servant, living in Charles Street, St Margaret, Westminster, with her mother Amelia (55), a Servant, her sister Evelina (29), a Servant and her nephews, Thomas Pearton (10) and Charles Pearton (7) (Evelina’s sons).

(Frederick was born on the 24^th July 1834, in St George the Martyr, Middlesex. He was baptised on the 21^st   September 1834, at St Andrew, Holborn, Middlesex, the son of William a (Carman) and Mary A. Robinson of 30 Eagle Street. In 1854 Frederick joined the Army, serving in the 20^th Hussars 3^rd Dragoon Guards.UK Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Admissions and Discharges 1715-1925 record Frederick as follow: Name: Frederick Robinson Rank: Sergeant Pension Age: 43 Birth Date: c1835 Birth Place: St George, London Pension Date: 11^th June 1878 Regiment: 20^th Hussars Regimental Number: 583).

Frederick and Emma had the following children baptised at the Garrison Chapel, Canterbury Barracks, Kent:

Louisa, born 1870 (baptised 10^th November 1870)

Clara, born c1872 (baptised 31^st March 1872)

The 1861 census records Frederick (26), a Sergeant in the 3^rd Dragoon Guards, Emma (25) and their son Fredrick William (2), lodging in Crown Street, Leeds, Yorkshire.

In 1871 Frederick (36), Sergeant 20^th Hussars, Emma (35), Frederick (12), Emma (9), Wilhelmina (5), Charles (3) and Louisa (5 months), were recorded living in the Army Barracks, in Northgate, Canterbury, Kent.

In 1881 Frederick (46) was recorded as a Yeomanry Instructor, living at 5 Devonshire Terrace, Oxford Road, Tilehurst, Reading, Berkshire, with Emma (45), Emma (18), Wilhelmina (16), both Dressmakers, Charles (13), Louisa (10), and Clara (9)

The 1891 census records Frederick (56) as a Retired Sergeant Major, living in Craven Road, Newbury, with Emma (56) and their daughters, Emma (29), Wilhelmina (26) and Clara (18), all Dressmakers and Louisa (20), a Stationer’s Assistant.

In 1901 Frederick (66) was recorded living on his own means, at 2 Lynton Villas, Newbury, with Emma (65) and their daughters, Emma (39) and Wilhelmina (35), both self-employed Dressmakers and Clara (29).

Frederick died aged 76 on the 7^th January 1911, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11^th January. (Abode at time of death, 11 Craven Road, Newbury)

The 1911 census records Emma (75) living on Private Means, at 11 Carven Road, Newbury. Her daughters Emma (47), Wilhelmina (44) and Clara (37) were still living at home with Emma and her daughters Emma and Wilhelmina were both still working as self-employed Dressmakers.

In 1921 Emma (85) and her daughters Emma (57) and Wilhelmina (54), were again recorded living at 11 Carven Road. Emma and Wilhelmina were again recorded as Dressmakers.

Emma died aged 94 on the 17^th March 1930. She was laid to rest with Frederick on the 21^st March.

Their daughter Emma died aged 68 on the 18^th June 1930, she was laid to rest with her parents on the 23^rd June.

Emma and Frederick’s daughters, Wilhelmina and Louisa were also buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery, Wilhelmina was buried on the 8^th March 1944 and Louisa was buried on the 15^th April 1955.
