Emily, her parents, siblings and early life:

Emily was born on the 28th June 1832, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 30th September 1832, at the Lower Meeting House, Independent, Newbury, the daughter of John and Mary Hearmon (nee Burgess) who were married in 1818, in Wallingford, Berkshire.

Her father John was baptised in 1792, in Wallingford, Berkshire, the son of William and Hannah Hearmon. John Hearman died aged 64, in 1855, in Newbury.

Emily’s mother Mary was baptised in 1794, in Wallingford, the daughter of Charles and Jane Burgess. Mary Hearman died aged 48 in 1842, in Newbury.

John and Mary also had the following three children:

William, born c1816, died aged 17, in 1833, buried 6th April, at the Lower Meeting House, (Independent) Newbury.

John, born 28th March 1817, baptised 27th April, in Chelsea Middlesex. (Dad an Excise Officer)

Mary Ann, baptised 10th May 1818, at St Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex (Dad an Excise Officer)

In 1841 Emily (8) was living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with her father John (50) a Tailor, her mother Mary (45) and her brother John (15), an Apprentice Tailor.

The 1851 census also records Emily (18) living in Northbrook Street. She was recorded working as a Dressmaker, living with her father John (58) a Tailor and Draper, her sister Mary Ann (32) and her brother John (25) a Journeyman Tailor.

Emily in later life:

Emily married William Allen c1861 (marriage registered in the March quarter, 1861, in Newbury)

(William was born on the 4th January 1828, he was baptised on the 10th February 1828, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of John (a Labourer) and Mary Allen (nee Andrews) of Bartholomew Street, Newbury)

William and Emily had the following three children:

Emily, born 1861

Arthur, born 1863

Mary Louisa, born 1865

In 1861 William (35) a Journeyman Boot & Shoe Maker and Emily (28) a Dressmaker, were living in Jack Street, Newbury

The 1871 census records William (45) as a Journeyman Bootmaker, living in Jack Street, Newbury with Emily (38) a Dressmaker, Emily (9), Arthur (7), Mary Lousia (5) and William’s mother Mary Holmes (71).

In 1881 William (56), a Boot Seller, Emily (48), a Milliner and Dressmaker, Arthur (17), a Printer and Compositor’s Apprentice and Mary (15), an Assistant Teacher, were now living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.   

The 1891 census records William (66), a Bootmaker, Emily (59), a Dressmaker, Arthur (27), a Printer’s Clerk, Arthur’s wife, Blanche (24), a Milliner and Mary Louisa (24), a Governess, still living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.

By 1901 William (76), Emily (68) and their daughter Emily (39), a Milliner, were living at 11 Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury.

Emily was widowed c1905, William died aged 79, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th January 1905.

A few weeks later, Emily was allocated a Raymond’s Almshouse.

The 1911 census records Emily aged 78, living at 3, Lower Raymond’s Almshouses, Bartholomew Street, Newbury. Her daughters Emily (49), Companion to her mother and Mary Louisa (45), a Housekeeper, were recorded living with her.

Emily died aged 82 in 1915. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd February.
