Jedidah Hill 1835 — 1914
Jedidah Hill (1835 — 1914)
Jedidah Carter was born circa 1835 in Hampstead Marshall the daughter of John and Sarah, nee Bowles, Carter.
In the 1841 census Jedidah was recorded living in Hampstead Marshall with her parents and five siblings. Her father John was a bricklayer. Jedidah cannot be located in the 1851 census, she was not living with her parents in Hampstead Marshall.
In the 1861 census Jedidah was living at Forbury Grove in Kintbury as a servant and her occupation was recorded as a domestic servant.
Jedidah married Richard Hill on 15 May 1862 at St Mary in Kintbury. Richard was a widower and his occupation was recorded as gentleman's servant. He was baptized on 14 October 1821 at Hannington in Wiltshire, the son of Henry and Sarah. In the 1871 census Richard and Jedidah with son Ernest Henry aged 7 and daughter Sarah Louisa aged 4 were living at Forbury Grove in Kintbury, with Richard recorded as a coachman.
Ten years later in the 1881 census Richard and Jedidah with daughter Sarah Louisa aged 15 and a lodger were living in London Road in Speen. Richard was recorded as a coachman and Sarah as a dressmaker. Richard and Jedidah with daughter Sarah and three boarders were still living in London Road in 1891 with Richard still a coachman.
Richard died only two days after the 1891 census on 4 May 1891 and was buried at St Mary the Virgin in Speen on 7 May 1891.
An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 7 May 1891 as below.
HILL May 4, at 20 London Road, Newbury, Richard Hill aged 66.
Jedidah's daughter Sarah Louisa married George Henry John Bayman on 10 October 1894 at St Mary in Speenhamland.
In the 1901 census Jedidah was living at 1 Berkeley Terrace in Newbury with two boarders and recorded as a boarding house keeper. In the 1911 census Jedidah was living with her son Ernest Henry his wife Jane and son Albert Henry at 36 West Street in Newbury. Ernest was recorded as a furniture dealers carman and Albert as a shop assistant apprentice.
Jedidah died March 1914 while living at 4 Church Almhouses and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 March 1914.
Jedidah's son Ernest Henry was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 January 1937 as were his wife and four children.
