Eleanor Pilbrow

Eleanor Pilbrow

c1835-1912

Eleanor (aka Ellen) was born in Donnington Berkshire she was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth James (nee Pavey) who were married in 1830 in Speen Berkshire. Elizabeth was born c1802 in Newbury and Henry was born c1810 in Donnington.

Both the 1841 and 1851 census records record Henry as an Agricultural Labourer, living in the village of Shaw-cum-Donnington with his wife Elizabeth and children, Martha born c1831 and Ellen born c1835

Martha married John Pocock in 1853 in Newbury.

Ellen married George Brown (born c1825 in Scotland) in Newbury in 1859. They had the following six sons:

Henry George c1860

Daniel 1861 (died aged 15 in 1877 buried in the NRC on the 26th June)

Male Brown 1863 (Later known as George)

Ernest John c1865 (died aged 67 in 1932 buried in the NRC on the 29th December)

Frederick Charles 1866

In the 1861 census George (34), a Tailor, Ellen (26) and their son Henry George (1) were recorded living with Ellen’s parents Henry (53), an Agricultural Labourer and Elizabeth (59) in Shaw-cum-Donnington Berkshire Also recorded in the household was a grandson, John Pocock aged 4.

Eleanor’s father died aged 65 in 1874 he was buried on the 24th June at St Mary the Virgin Shaw-cum-Donnington.

Eleanor’s husband George died aged 45 in 1870 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th May

The 1871 census records Ellen (36) as a Tailoress, living in the Rose and Thistle Yard Newbury with her six sons and a lodger, John Pilbrow (41), a Shoemaker.

Eleanor’s son Daniel died aged 15 in 1877 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th June

Eleanor remarried in Newbury in 1877 her 2nd husband was her lodger, John Osborne Pilbrow (born c1830 Woolpit Suffolk)

The 1881 census records John Pilbrow (51), as a Shoemaker, living in the Rose and Thistle Yard Pembroke Road Newbury with his wife Eleanor (45), and step-sons, Ernest John Brown (16), a Grocer’s Porter, Frederick Brown (14), and Errand Boy and John Brown (13), an Errand Boy.

In both the 1891 and 1901 census records John was recorded as a Shoemaker and Eleanor was recorded as a Tailoress , living in Pembroke Road.

John died aged 76 in 1906 in the Newbury Workhouse he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th February

The 1911 census records Eleanor (76) living at 5 Croft Cottages Pembroke Road with her widowed son Henry George Brown (51) and his son Henry George (24), both were recorded as Builder’s Labourers.

Eleanor died aged 77 in 1912 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th Oct
