Winifred Nellie Crook
1909-1910
Winifred was born on the 7th February 1909, Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 10th April 1909 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of William and Annie Althea Sarah Crook (nee Povey) (see marriage details below)
Winifred died aged 14 months, in 1910, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd May.
Winifred’s family:
Her father William was born on the 19th June 1881, in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 4th September 1881, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Edward and Hannah Maria Crook (Anna Maria) (nee Coxhead) who were married on the 18th December 1872, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.
Winifred’s mother was born in 1880, Sarah Ann Povey Bushnell, (aka Annie Althea Sarah Povey). She was baptised on the 10th September 1880, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann Bushnell (father’s name recorded as John Povey, then crossed out on the baptism record). Mary Ann Bushnell (aka Althea) married John Povey on the 4th September 1880, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.
William and Annie’s marriage details:

Date: 3rd December 1904
Groom: William Crook, aged 23, bachelor, occupation, Labourer, abode: St John’s View, Newbury
Bride: Annie Althea Sarah Povey, aged 24, spinster, abode, St John’s View, Newbury
Fathers: Edward Crook, and John Richard Povey, both Labourers
Witnesses: John Richard Povey and Elizabeth Harriet Herbert
William and Annie also had the following children:
Annie Ethel Althea, born 3rd October 1905, baptised 31st December 1905, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Daisy Florence Gwendoline, born 27th September 1910, baptised 30th October 1910, at St Nicolas, Newbury
William Frederick John born 10th January 1913, in Newbury
Leslie Edward Francis born 15th December 1914, in Middlesex
In 1911 William (29) was working as a Labourer in the Engineering Department, for the Great Western Railway. He was living at 3, Diamond Cottages, Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with Annie (30), their daughters, Ethel (5), Daisy (6 months) and a boarder.
William died aged 36, on the 2nd July 1917, while serving as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Engineers during WW1.
Annie remarried in 1918, in Bristol. Her 2nd husband was Frederick James Coxhead (Frederick was the half-brother of William Crook, Annie’s 1st husband).
(Frederick James Coxhead was born in 1861, in Hampstead Marshall, Berkshire, the illegitimate son of Anna Maria Coxhead. He married Rose Peacock in 1896. They had the following children, born in Gloucestershire. Eliza 1897, Lily, 1899, Helen, c1902, Frederick James c1904, Rose, 1906 and William Henry, c1910. Frederick was widowed in 1917)
In 1921 Frederick (59) a Fireman, Annie (40), Rose Coxhead (15), Annie Ethel Althea Crook (15), Daisy Florence Gwendoline Crook (10), William Frederick John Crook (8) and Leslie Edward Francis Crook (6), were living at 19, Victoria Place, Bedminster, Bristol
Frederick and Annie had the following two daughters:
Nora Maria, c1921
Ivy Beryl, 1924
Frederick died aged 75 in 1936, in Bristol
In 1939 Annie was living at 147, Broadfield Road, Bristol. Also living with her were her son, Leslie, her daughters Nora, Ivy, Daisy Florence Gwendoline Ray and her son-in-law, Arthur Ray.
Annie died aged 77, in 1958, in Bristol.
