Joseph Elliott (1828 – 1909)
Joseph Elliott was born circa 1828 in Newbury the son of John and Elizabeth, nee Rosier, Elliott.
He was recorded in the 1841 census with his parents John and Elizabeth along with siblings Henry aged 20, John aged 15, Mary aged 13 and Arthur aged 9 living in Northbrook Street in Newbury. John senior was recorded as a bricklayer and his brothers Henry and John as bricklayer apprentices.
Ten years later in the 1851 census Joseph was recorded with his mother Elizabeth, now a widow, together with brothers Henry aged 27, John aged 25 and Arthur aged 20 still living in Northbrook Street. Joseph and all his brothers were recorded as bricklayers.
In the 1861 census Joseph was recorded with his mother Elizabeth together with brother Arthur living in Winchcombe Place in Newbury. Joseph was recorded as bricklayer and Arthur as a carpenter employing one man.
Joseph’s mother Elizabeth died March 1871 and she was buried at St Mary in Speen on 25 March 1871.
A few days later Joseph was recorded in the 1871 census living at 14 Northbrook Street in Newbury with his occupation being a master bricklayer.
Ten years later in the 1881 census Joseph was living by himself in Winchcombe Place in Newbury and now recorded as a master wood turner. Joseph was recorded by himself at 1 Winchcombe Place in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses and still a wood turner.
Joseph died November 1909 aged circa 83 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 November 1909.
