George was born in the Boxford/Stockcross area of Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Perriss (nee Bayley/Bailey) who were married on the 12th August 1822, in Hungerford, Berkshire.

His father Thomas was born c1790 in Welford, Berkshire. He died aged 72, in 1862 and was buried on the 15th October, at St Gregory, Welford.

His mother Sarah Ann Bailey/Bayley was born c1792, in West Shefford, Berkshire. She died aged 82, in 1874, and was buried on the 15th February, at St Mary, Kintbury.

Thomas and Sarah Ann also had the following children baptised in Welford/ Wickham:

Maria, 19th January 1823

Mary, 26th July 1825

William, 17th June 1827

Harriet, 25th September 1831

John Perriss, 15th September 1833 (died aged 6, buried 24th July 1839, at St Gregory, Welford)

Thomas Perriss, 20th March 1836

James, born 1840 (no baptism found)

Mark, born 1842 (no baptism found)

 

In 1841 George (3) was recorded living in Wickham/Welford, Berkshire, with his father Thomas (45), an Agricultual Labouer, his mother Sarah (45) and his siblings, Maria (18), Wiliam (14), Harriet (9), Thomas (5) and James (11 months).

George married Ann Carter in 1859 (marriage registered in Newbury)

George and Ann had the following children:

The 1861 census records George (24), an Agricultural Labourer, Ann (22), Ellen Carter (4) and Mary Ann (1), living in the City, Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1871 George (35), a Labourer and Hawker, Ann (35), Ellen (14), Mary Ann (11), George (8), Edwin (3), Albert (1) and a widow, Elizabeth Brooker (40) (recorded as sister), were recorded living in Stockcross Village, Berkshire.

George was widowed in 1879, Ann died aged 42 (death registered in the March quarter, in Newbury)

Geroge remarried in 1879 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury). His 2nd wife was a widow, Ann Soper (nee Adey).

(Ann Adey was born in 1842, in East Woodhay, Hampshire. The daughter of Robert and Mary Adey (nee Aubrey) who were married in 1827 in East Woodhay, Hampshire. Ann married Henry Soper on the 2nd August 1873, in East Woodhay. They had two sons baptised in East Woodhay. Richard, born 1874, baptised 3rd January 1875 and George, born c1877, baptised 4th February 1877).

George and Ann had a son Henry Thomas, born in 1880, in Newbury.

The 1881 census records George (48), a General Labourer, Ann (41), Edwin (13), a General Labourer, Albert (11), Charles (9), Richard (6), George (4) and Henry (9 months), living in Stockcross. (Richard and George’s surnames recorded as Perris)

In 1891 George (53) was working as a General Labourer, he was living in Pembroke Road, Newbury, with Ann (52), Albert (21), a Carter, Charles (19), a Groom, Richard (16), a Grocer’s Porter, George (14) and Henry (10).

George was widowed again in 1894. Ann died aged 54, on the 20th June, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th June 1894.

In 1901 George (70) was again recorded living in Pembroke Road, Newbury. He was working as a Road Labourer. His son Henry (20), a Butcher’s Assistant and his stepson, Richard Soper (26), a Grocer’s Porter, were recorded living with him.

George died aged 75, on the 4th December 1908, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th December.
