Winifred was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Caroline Julia Baggs (nee Lawrence). She died aged 16 months and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th October 1907.

Winifred’s family:

Winifred’s mother Caroline Julia (aka Julia) Lawrence was born on the 16th July 1876 in Basingstoke, Hampshire, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Ann Lawrence (nee Redwing/Readwin/Redwin). Caroline’s parents were married in 1883 in Basingstoke.

Caroline married William Raindle in South Stoneham, Hampshire, in 1900. They had the following 3 sons (Winifred’s half-siblings):

William Albert, baptised 22nd July 1900 in St Michael, Basingstoke (dad a Gas Fitter, abode, 8 Barton Road Eastleigh)

Federick, born 1901, died aged 1 day, buried 29th May 1901, in Eastleigh.

Frederick Arthur, born 14th May 1902, baptised 1st June 1902 in Eastleigh (dad an Engineer, abode, 136 Cranbury Road)

The 1901 census records Julia (Caroline Julia) aged 24, living at 8 Barton Road, Eastleigh, with William, aged 28, a Gas Fitter (Railway) and their son William A. aged 9 months.

Caroline was widowed in 1902, William Raindle died aged 29, he was buried on the 5th July 1902, at St Michael, Basingstoke.

Caroline remarried in 1903 (marriage registered in the December quarter, Basingstoke). He 2nd husband was William Baggs (Walter William Baggs).

Winifred’s father William (aka Walter William) was born in 1872, he was baptised (as William) on the 28th April 1872 in Hannington, Hampshire, the son of James and Harriet Baggs (nee Hunt) who were married in 1867 (marriage registered in the December quarter, in Kingsclere)

Winifred’s full siblings were:

Constance Alethia May, born 8th May 1904, in Hampshire

Stanley Archibald Walter, born 9th August 1908, in Newbury

Ernest Walter, born 22nd October 1910, in Newbury

Olive Julia, born 20th March 1912, in Newbury

Gwendoline Eva, born c1915 in Newbury (died aged 1 month, buried in the NRC, 30th January 1915)

William John, born 4th September 1916, in Newbury

The 1911 census records William (37) as a Gas Works Stoker, (Corporation Gas Works), living at 3 North Cottages, Old Newtown Road, Newbury, with Caroline (37) and their children, Constance (6), Stanley (3) and Ernest (5 months).

The 1918- 1926 electoral registers record Caroline and Walter William Baggs living at 1 Beaufont Cottages, Mayor’s Lane, Newbury.

Walter William Baggs died aged 53, in 1927, his funeral service was held on the 19th November 1927, at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

The 1939 Register records Caroline living at 61 Skylings, Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1964 Caroline was living with her daughter Constance Alethea May James, at 135 Whitley Wood Lane, Reading Berkshire.

Caroline Julia Baggs died aged 88 in 1967 (death registered in the March quarter in Wokingham)
