The late Mr R H Jarvis.

The death of Mr Richard Henry Jarvis of Bartholomew Street removes a notable figure from local life. He had been resident in Newbury about 30 years. His specialty and life was the collection of curios and antiques, for which he had particular amplitude in discovering. He possessed considerable knowledge of the value of old books, pictures, China, in fact, anything that was genuinely old. He would journey many miles to pick up an unconsidered trifle in the eyes of the unskilled, and might often be seen returning home with the results of his investigations . Many people sought his advice in the appraisement of articles , and his little shop, in Bartholomew Street, contained quite an interesting collection. A man of decided convictions on certain points of public policy, he did not hesitate to express them to unsympathetic ears. Of more than ordinary statue his appearance was strikingly original. The funeral took place on Saturday at the Newtown-road cemetery, the Rev. T. W. Beck conducting the service. The mourners were Mrs. Jarvis (widow), Mr. Walter Jarvis (brother) and Nurse Cripps. Wreaths and flowers were contributed. by: Wife, Sister and Nurse, Mr. and Mrs. Baverstock, Mr. and Mrs. Deans, Mr. and Mrs. Barnard (IHungerford), Mrs. Bannister and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Wickens. Anongst the friends at the graveside were Mrs. H. Michell, Mr. Stephen North, Mr. and Mrs. Baverstock, Mrs. Deans, Mrs. Tall, Mrs. and Miss Bannister, Mrs. Buckeridge. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. T. U. Cullum, of Northcroft.
