Lucy Turk was baptised in Aug 1828 at Greenham. Her parents were Hannah and John Burton. Lucy had a younger sister Eliza Burton.
Lucy married John Turk on the 9th December 1856. By the 1861 census they were living at St Marys Hill, Newbury and were listed as Iron Founder Master and Iron Founder’s wife. They had a son John Burton listed as being aged 4.
By 1881 they still lived in Cheap Street where they ran their Iron Foundry making agricultural implements which were used throughout England. Turk’s ploughs were highly esteemed by agriculturalists. Iron railings made by Turk & Son are believed to be around The Parish Church.
On the Kings Road West side of 55 Cheap Street, you can see the sign for Povey & Wade, this was painted over the former Turk & Son ghost sign, which you can just see behind.
Lucy's husband John passed away in 1886 and she continued to run the business alongside her son until he also passed away at the age of 39 in 1896. Lucy died on the 4th June and was buried on the 7th June 1904. Failing health had rendered her a partial invalid. Cause of death was recorded as Renal Insufficiency ending in Coma.
