Sarah Palethorpe

Sarah, her parents, siblings and early life:

Sarah was born in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, the daughter of Henry and Maria Jephson (nee Jackson) who were married on the 4^th September 1820, at St Mary the Virgin (Minster), Southwell.

Her father Henry was baptised in 1799 in Winkburn, Nottinghamshire, the son of William and Rebecca Jephson (nee Ball) who were married on the 2^nd December 1792, at St Wilfrid, Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottingham. Henry died aged 58, in 1857, he was buried on the 19^th March, at St Mary the Virgin (Minster), Southwell.

Sarah’s mother Maria was baptised on the 16^th February 1802, at St Mary the Virgin (Minster), Southwell, the daughter of Richard and Mary Jackson (nee Ellis) who were married on the 3^rd March 1788, at St Mary the Virgin (Minster) Southwell. Maria died aged 49, in 1850, she was buried on the 24^th November at St Mary the Virgin (Minster), Southwell.

Henry and Maria also had the following children baptised in Southwell:

The 1841 census records Sarah (8) living in Back Lane, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, with her father Henry (40), an Agricultural Labourer, her mother Maria (39), Her sister Emma (10) and her brother Samuel (5).

By 1851 Sarah (17) was working as a House Servant, in Marston, Lincolnshire.

Robert and Sarah had the following children:

William, born 1856, (baptised 12^th October 1856, at All Saints Hough-on-the-Hill, Lincolnshire, abode Gelston, dad a Labourer)

John Frederick, born 1858, (baptised 3^rd October 1858, at St Mary, Marston, Lincolnshire, abode, Marston, dad a Labourer)

The 1861 census records Robert (28) as a Platelayer, working for the Great Northern Railway, living in a G.N.R. Cottage, near the G.N.R. Station, in Carlton on Trent, Nottinghamshire.

Sarah was widowed in 1866. Robert died aged 34, he was buried on the 21^st June, at All Saints, Sutton on Trent, Nottinghamshire.

The 1871 census records Sarah (38) working as a Laundress, living in North Road, Sutton on Trent, Nottinghamshire, with her sons, William (14), a Labourer and John (12).

Sarah was widowed again in 1872, George (a Farm Labourer) died aged 23 on the 9^th June, in Sutton on Trent. He was buried on the 11^th June, at All Saints, Sutton on Trent, Nottinghamshire.

Sarah remarried on the 25^th December 1873, in Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire. He 3^rd husband was Joseph Palethorpe, a Plasterer.

(Joseph was baptised on the 29^th April 1830, at St Mary Magdalene, Newark, Nottinghamshire, the son of Daniel (a Labourer) and Elizabeth Palethorpe (nee Hallam) who were married on the 28^th November 1807, in Newark).

The 1881 census records Joseph (49), a General Labourer and Sarah (47), a Laundress, living in Chatham Street, Newark Upon Trent, Nottinghamshire.

In 1891 Joseph (59), a Pensioner and Sarah (57), were living in North Gate, Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The 1901 census records Joseph (69), an Army Pensioner and Sarah (67), living with Sarah’s son Samuel Wilson (47), a Master Foreman, in Malt Cottages, King’s Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

Sarah died aged 67, in 1901. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13^th November. (Abode at time of death, 4 Skinner’s Buildings, King’s Road, Newbury) 

Joseph died aged 69, on the 25^th October 1902, in the Newbury Workhouse. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28^th November.
