John Charles Tucker

1866-1927

John, his parents, siblings and early life:

John Charles was born in Hampstead Norris, Berkshire, the son of Henry and Hannah Tucker (nee Wernham) who were married in 1861 (marriage registered in Wantage)

His father Henry was baptised in 1837 at St Peter, Brimpton, Berkshire the son of John and Charlotte Tucker (nee Bidmead) who were married on the 29^th May 1813, in Brimpton.

His mother Hannah was baptised on the 24^th May 1835, at St Mary, Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire, the daughter of Richard and Phoebe Wernham (nee Haines) who were married on the 15^th October 1831 at St Mary, Hampstead Norryes (witnesses, Jeremiah Wernham and Eleanor Wernham).

Henry and Hannah also had the following children:

Amy Eliza, born 1862, in Hampstead Norris

Charlotte Annie, 1864, in Hampstead Norris

Harriet Agnes, 1870, in Hampstead Norris

Rose Hannah, c1873, in Brimpton

Phoebe Elizabeth, born 1877, in Newbury (died aged 1 month, buried in the NRC on the 31^st March)

In 1871 Henry (35), a Labourer, Hannah (35,) Amy (8), Charlotte (6), John (4) and Harriet (9 months), were recorded living at Birch Farm, situated in Frilsham, Berkshire. (Recorded as being in Bucklebury in this census)

No record of John found in the 1881 census. (a possibility: Jack Tucker aged 14, Chimney Sweep, living in Bartholomew Street, working for a Mark Parsons aged 38)

Bride: Mary Jane Buxey, aged 19, spinster, of this parish

Fathers: Henry Tucker, a Miller and Joseph Buxey, a Brewer

Witnesses: Amy Buxey and Maurice Buxey

(Mary Jane Buxey was born c1866, in Newbury, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Buxey (nee Bridgeman) who were married in 1860, in Inkpen, Berkshire)

John and Mary Jane had the following two daughters:

Florence Mary, born in 1886, baptised 2^nd January 1887, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Baker, abode, Greenham)

Agnes Kate, born in 1889, baptised 9^th July 1889, at St Nicolas, Newbury, (dad a Baker, abode, Marsh Street, Newbury)

Their daughter Agnes Kate died aged 1 in 1890. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th November.

In 1891 John (24) was working as a Baker, living at 35 Marsh Street, Newbury, with Mary (25), a Dressmaker and their daughter Florence (4).

John as widowed in 1892, Mary Jane died aged 26, of cirrhosis of the liver and exhaustion. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^th April.

John remarried in 1893

Witnesses: Maria Bray and Agnes Dorothy Tucker

John and Kathleen had the following four children:

Henry Victor, born 19^th June 1897, in Wantage, Berkshire.

Geoffrey Braybrooke, born 6^th October 1902, baptised 23^rd November 1902, at St Peter, Brighton, Sussex

Kathleen Charlotte Irene, born 22^nd September 1907, baptised 1^st December 1907 at St Peter, Brighton, Sussex

A stillborn son born 1910, laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13^th June.

The 1901 census records John (34), a Baker & Shopkeeper, Kathleen (30), Florence (14) and Henry Victor (3), living at 83 Trafalgar Street, Brighton, Sussex

By 1911 John (44), a Baker & Confectioner, Kathleen (38), Henry (13), Geoffrey (8) and Kathleen (3), were living at 9 Berkeley Road Westfields, Newbury, Berkshire. Also record in the household were two boarders.

John was widowed again in 1918, Kathleen died aged 46, on the 7^th November. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13^th November. (Abode at time of death, 2 Bartholomew Terrace, Newbury)

The 1921 census records John (54) as a Baker and Confectioner, living at 2 Bartholomew Terrace, Newbury with his children, Henry (42), who was out of work and Kathleen (13).

John Charles died aged 61 on the 19^th October 1927, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with his wife Kathleen Florence, on the 22^nd October (Abode at time of death, 15 Pound Street, Newbury).
