Emma Meredew

1850-1927

Emma was a Dressmaker. She was born in 1850, in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Emma was baptised on the 20th October 1850, in Winslade, Hampshire, the daughter of George and Martha Merridew (nee Munday) who were married on the 13th October 1846 in Upper Chelsea, Middlesex (surname recorded as Meredew.) George, was a widower)

Her father George was a Gardener. He was born c1797 (place unknown). George died aged 58, in 1855, he was buried on the 11th September, in Old Basing, Hampshire.

Her mother Martha was born c1809, in Tunworth, Hampshire. Martha died aged 65, in 1874, she was buried on the 26th December, in Old Basing, Hampshire

George and Martha also had the following two children:
William Meredew, baptised 1st April 1849, in Winslade, Basingstoke

Ann Merridew, baptised 18th July 1852, in Winslade, Basingstoke

The 1851 census records Emma Merridew (6 months) living in Hackwood Gardens, Basing, Hampshire, with her father George (55), a Gardener, employing 7 men and 4 women, her mother Martha (42) and her brother William (2)

The 1861 census records Emma Merridew (10), living with her widowed mother Martha (52), who was working as a Housekeeper and her brother William (12)

In 1871 Emma Meredew (20), was living in Basingstoke, Hampshire, with her mother Martha (62), now working as an Upholsteress, her brother William (22), a Clerk and her sister Ann (18).

In 1881 Emma Meredew (30) and her sister Annie (28), a Milliner were living in New Road, Basingstoke, Hampshire

The 1891 census records Emma Merredew (34), as a visitor, at 5, St Mary’s Place, Speenhamland, Newbury.

In 1901 Emma Meredew (50), was living alone, at “Kildare”, London Road, Newbury

The 1911 census records Emma Merdew (60), as a visitor, at 20 Northbrook Street, Newbury

The 1921 census record on ancestry records Emma Mereden (70), living at 1 Edinburgh Terrace, West Mills, Newbury. Also recorded living with her was a boarder, Arthur G. Palmer (41), a Musician at The Picture Palace, Newbury.

Emma Meredew died aged 77. In the Newbury Workhouse in 1927, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th August.
