Widow Hensman

| Transciption: | Death mystery - A case of sudden death occurred in Newbury last week attended with more than ordinary interest. The deceased person was Widow Hensman, living at Caroline Place, Northbrook-street. She was 77 years old and was thought to be in a poor condition, and was allowed 2s 6d a week by the Guardians and a loaf of bread, but since severe weather set in the sum has been increased to 3s 6d. Mrs. Coventry of Kennett Place used to go for her money, and took it to her on Wednesday last about half-past ten, when she appeared to be quite well and happy, only complaining about the cold. That was the last time she was seen alive, for on Friday evening, the neighbours, not having seen her about, began to think something was wrong. A constable broke open the door, then he went upstairs and forced the bedroom door where he beheld the widow lying half on and half off the bed - dead. Then some peculiar discoveries were made. Mr Rawlings, the relieving officer, and another constable arrived on the scene and searched the house. The bedroom was not only inhabited by the old woman but afforded lodgement for two live fowls and a starling. Under the mattress was a belt containing £15 6s 7d. whilst there was plenty of food and good clothing, amongst other things being two silk dresses. A verdict of death from natural causes was agreed upon.
