JAMES PYKE
THE LATE MR. JAMES PYKE
The death took place on Friday of Mr. James Pyke, of West-street. For over half-a-century he had been a familiar figure at local sales, having started as a boy in the service of the late Mr. Alexander Davis of the Market Place, and continued with the successive firms, Messrs. Few and Dreweatt, then Messrs. Dreweatt and Watson, until a few years ago he retired from active duty. He had attended nearly all the most important sales in the district, and himself had a keen eye for any bargain that might happen to be going. He was an ardent angler, and made this his recreation. Deceased was a prominent member of the the Loyal Britons Pride Lodge of Oddfellows for over fifty years and was one of the lodge trustees for 30 or 40 years. Latterly he had been laid aside by serious illness. A few weeks ago he and his wife reached the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding.
The funeral took place on Tuesday at Newbury Cemetery, the Rev. A. B. Barnes officiating.
The mourners included Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Pyke (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. E.A.Green (daughter and son-in-law), Mr. G. Pyke (son), Mr. and Mrs. Ireland (daughter and son-in-law). Messrs G.E. and G.R. Pyke (grandsons), and several grandchildren. Attending on behalf of the Oddfellows were Bros. W. Ward, P.P.G.M., David Geater, P.P.G.M., corresponding secretary, and Bro. J.R. Witts, G.M., fellow trustees, also Bro. J.R. Witts, G.M., and Bro. H. Cruse. The firm of Messrs Dreweatt and Watson, was represented by Mr. Arthur T. Watson, the senior member, Mr. Thomas Dreweatt, being away on holiday; Messrs S. North and E. Furnice representing the staff.
Among the wreaths contributed were "It is not goodbye, but only good night, from his loving wife", from his devoted family, George and Flo and family, grandchildren Marion and Jimmy, S. Brindley and B. Green, "From Messrs Dreweatt and Watson in memory of many years' faithful service and friendship," and "In loving service and friendship" and "In loving memory of a fellow clerk, from S.N., E.F., and A.G.H." Mrs. Nailor and family, Miss Simmons, etc. The coffin was inscribed
"James Pyke born Sept 23, 1838, died Aug 13, 1909" The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs Hopson and Sons.
