Ann her parents, siblings and early life:

Ann was born in 1854, she was baptised on the 7th January 1855 at St Mary Kintbury, the daughter of Alfred and Fanny Sturgess/Sturges (nee Gigg) who were married on the 6th November 1845 at St Mary Kintbury (Fanny’s surname was recorded as Gregg)

 

Her father Alfred was an Agricultural Labourer, he was baptised on the 4th February 1821 at St Mary Kintbury, the son of William and Rachel Sturges (nee Gold) who were married on the 25th December 1802 at St Mary Kintbury. Alfred died aged 72 in 1894, he was buried on the 23rd June at St Mary Kintbury.

 

Her mother Fanny was born c1823 in Oakhill in the parish of Froxfield, Wiltshire, she baptised on the 2nd February 1823 in Froxfield, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Gigg (nee Hunt) who were married on the 10th October 1805 in Froxfield. Fanny died aged 67 in 1889, she was buried on the 20th November at St Mary Kintbury.

 

Alfred and Fanny also had the following children baptised St Mary Kintbury:

Henry baptised 12th July 1846 (died aged 6 in 1852, buried on the 30th September at St Mary Kintbury)

Edward baptised 2nd July 1848 (died aged 4 in 1852, buried on the 30th September at St Mary Kintbury)

William 1850 baptised 7th July 1850

Elizabeth 1852 baptised 1st July 1852

Richard baptised 5th April 1857

George baptised 1st December 1861

John baptised 5th June 1864

 

The 1861 census records Ann (6) living in Kintbury with her parents and siblings William (11), Elizabeth (9) and Richard (4). (Surname recorded as Stuyers on Ancestry).

 

Ann later in life:

In 1871 Ann was recorded aged 16 working as a General Servant in Speen Village for a widower, George Webb (70) and his daughter Eliza (37).

 

The 1881 census records Ann (28) as a Domestic Servant, at 1 Porchester Villa, Newbury, the home of Joseph F Hickman, a Retired Chemist, Justice of the Peace and Alderman.

 

Ann married William George Brazier in 1884 (William was born William George Hall in 1850, in Hampstead Marshall Berkshire, the illegitimate son of Mary Hall. His mother married William Brazier later that year and William George was then known as William George Brazier).

Bride: Ann Sturgess, aged 30, spinster

Fathers: William Brazier, a Shepherd and Alfred Sturgess, a Labourer

Witnesses: Richard Sturges and Emily Marshall

 

The 1891 census records Ann (38) living at 4 Edward’s Cottages, St John’s Road, Newbury with her husband William (39), a Maltster’s Labourer and her father Alfred (71), an Agricultural Labourer.

 

William died aged 47 on the 22nd July 1897, (funeral service held at St John the Evangelist Newbury) he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th July.

 

In 1901 Ann (48) was working as a Laundress, living in Newbury.

 

The 1911 census records Ann (58) as a Seamstress living at 4 Pleasant Place, St John’s Road, Newbury.

 

By 1927 Ann was living in an Almshouse in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

 

She died aged 72 on the 21st March 1927 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th March
