1822-1899

Charles Gaiter, born 18th May 1822, he was baptised on the 20th April 1823 (Wesleyan Methodist), the son of Lawrence and Mary Geater (nee Blackman) who were married on the 29th July 1811, in East Woodhay, Hampshire. (Both were from Newbury).

His father Lawrence was baptised on the 14th September 1788, in Kintbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Mary Geater (nee Langfield) who were married on the 10th October 1787, in Kintbury.

His mother Mary was baptised on the 23rd January 1785, at St Nicolas, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Christian (spelt Xtian) Blackman.

Lawrence and Mary also had the following children:

John, born c1812

Elizabeth Gater baptised 18th May 1814, at St Nicolas, Newbury

William Geater, baptised 14th April 1816, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Ann Gater, baptised 19th April 1818, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Twins: George and Thomas Gater, baptised 28th August 1820 (Thomas died aged 2 years 2 months, he was buried on the 15th November 1822, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

David, born c1826

Joseph, born c1830

 

Charles married in 1843

Marriage details:

Place: St Nicolas Church, Newbury

Date: 3rd July 1843

Groom: Charles Geater, full age, bachelor, occupation, Labourer, abode, Newbury

Bride: Elizabeth Challis, aged 17, spinster, abode, Newbury

Fathers: Lawrence Geater, a Bricklayer and Henry Challis, A Carpenter

Witnesses: George Stillman and John Totty Mayo

(Elizabeth was baptised on the 4th October 1829, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Henry (a Carpenter) and Frances Challis)

Charles and Elizabeth had the following children:

Charles Henry, born 3rd July 1843, (the same day his parents married) baptised 24th September 1843, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Thomas, born 1844 (died in 1845)

Twins Mary and Fanny, born and baptised on the 18th October 1845, at St Nicolas, Newbury. (Fanny died aged 2 weeks, she was buried on the 8th November.  Mary died aged 3, in the Newbury Workhouse, she was buried on the 8th August 1849. Both girls were buried at St Nicolas, Newbury)

In 1861 Charles (38) was working as a General Labourer, lodging with his brother George (40) and his family, in Union Chapel Yard, Newbury.

No census records found for Elizabeth in 1851 and 1861.

The 1871 census records Charles (48), a Hay Trusser and Elizabeth (44), living in Old Road, Newbury. (Surname mistakenly recorded as Graton on ancestry)

In 1881 Charles (59), a Hay Binder and Elizabeth (55), were recorded living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury. (Surname mistakenly recorded as Gater on ancestry)

They were again recorded living in Old Newtown Road in 1891. Charles (69) was recorded as a Hay Cutter. Elizabeth was recorded aged 65.

Charles died aged 77, on the 20th November 1899, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd November.

The 1901 census records Elizabeth (78), living at 4 Wakefield’s Cottages Stroud Green, Newbury.

Elizabeth died on the 30th October 1905, aged 82, in the Newbury Workhouse, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd November.
