William Jeremiah Hill 1801 — 1883

William Jeremiah Hill (1801 — 1883)

William was born 5 December 1801 (or possibly 1802) in Kingsclere, the son of Jeremiah and Susannah. He was baptized on 13 February 1803 at St Mary in Kingsclere, at that time the family were living in Kingsclere Town and his father was a tailor.

William married Mary Anne Bayman on 18 December 1823 at Holy Cross, Ramsbury in Wiltshire. Mary Ann was baptized in Ramsbury on 20 May 1798, the daughter of James and Ann. A daughter Mary Ann was born on 24 October 1824 and baptized on 21 November 1824 at Newbury Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. Mary Ann was baptized again on 21 September 1828 at St Mary in Kingsclere when William & Mary Ann were living in Newbury with William a draper. Mary Ann died May 1839 and was buried on 15 May 1839 at St Nicolas in Newbury. 
In the 1841 census William with children William aged 10 and Martha aged 8 were living in Northbrook Street in Newbury, William was recorded as a journeyman tailor. 
Ten years later in the 1851 census William was recorded in Bartholomew Street in Newbury with his daughter Mary Ann Lewendon and her husband Eliel. William had no occupation recorded although the census did confirm he was deaf, as did all subsequent ones. By the time of the 1861 census William was living by himself in Westcombe Buildings in Northbrook Street in Newbury and recorded as a tailor and deaf. In the 1871 census William was living with his daughter Sarah Floyd and her family in Wash Road in Newbury and he was recorded as a retired tailor. He was still living with Sarah and her family  in the 1881 census. 


William died 5 December 1883 aged 82 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 10 December 1883. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 6 December 1883 as below. 
HILL — Dec. 5, after a lingering illness, William Jeremiah Hill, the beloved father of Mrs. Floyd, Andover Road, Newbury, on his 82nd birthday.

William left a will and probate was granted on 22 December 1883 at London to Thomas Fidler of Portchester Villas in Newbury and Reverend Henry Thornhill Morgan of St John's Vicarage in Newbury, a clerk. The value of the estate was £569 5s. 
Villiam's daughter Sarah Floyd was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 25 October 1907.
