Annie Adams

Annie, her parents, siblings and early life:

Anne (aka Annie) was baptised on the 8^th June 1835, in Bullington Hampshire, the daughter of Richard (a Dairyman) and Jane Fifield (nee Annetts) who were married on the 24^th November 1830, at St Peter, Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire. Richard was from the parish of Chilbolton.

Annie’s father Richard was baptised on the 16^th October 1808, in East Stratton, Hampshire, (with his brother William) the son of John and Elizabeth Fifield (nee Lapern) who were married on the 12^th May 1798, in Micheldever, Hampshire. Richard died aged 87 in 1891. He was buried on the 3^rd October at St Mary, Greenham, Berkshire.

Her mother Jane was baptised on the 5^th February 1804, in Penton Mewsey, Andover, Hampshire, the daughter of Edward and Mary Annetts (nee Hillier) who were married on the 14^th June 1787, in Penton Mewsey. Jane died aged 69 in 1872. She was buried on the 16^th March, at Christchurch with St Mary, Swindon, Wiltshire.

Richard and Jane also had the following children baptised in Hampshire:

Sarah, baptised 20^th November 1831, in Barton Stacey (Dad a Shopkeeper)

George, baptised 7^th July 1833, in Barton Stacey (Dad a Shopkeeper)

Henry Richard, baptised 14^th January 1839, in Bullington (Dad a Cattle Jobber)

Edwin Richard, baptised 18^th October 1840, in Bullington (Dad a Dairyman)

In 1841 Annie (6) was recorded living in a Cottage in Bullington, Hampshire, with her father Richard (35), a Dealer, her mother Jane (35) and her brother Edwin (9 months)

The 1851 census records Annie (15) as a Dressmaker, she was living at the George Inn, St Mary Bourne, Hampshire, with her uncle, Joseph Fifield (37), the Innkeeper and his family.

Annie in later life:

Annie married James Adams in 1859 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(James was born in Bucklebury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 17^th April 1831, in Bucklebury, Berkshire, the son of George and Elizabeth Adams (nee Winterbourne) who were married in 1817 in Bucklebury, Berkshire).

James and Annie had the following eight children:

Annie’s father Richard was the Innkeeper of the “Adam and Eve” in Greenham in 1851.      The Reading Chronicle dated the 17^th December 1859 records the transfer of the “Adam and Eve” from Richard Fifield to James Adams.

In 1861 James (30), a Timber Merchant and Innkeeper, was recorded living at the “Adam & Eve,” Greenham, Berkshire with Annie (25), their son, Frederick Fifield (6 months) a visitor, Alice Adams (10), (James’s niece) two servants and a lodger.

James and Annie’s son Frederick Fifield Adams died aged 3 in 1863, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19^th September.

In 1871 James (40), a Timber Merchant, Annie (35) and their children, Henry (9), Albert (7), Edgar (5), Percival (4), Auberon (2) and Edith (9 months), were recorded living in Greenham Street, Greenham, Berkshire.

The 1881 census also records the family living in Greenham Street, as follows: James (50) a Timber Dealer, Annie (45), Edgar (15), Clerk to Timber Dealer, Percival (14), Auberon (12), Edith Maud (10) and Bertha May (8).   Annie’s widowed father Richard Fifield (76), a retired Hay and Cattle Dealer was also living with them.

Annie died aged 47 on the 17^th October 1882, at 2 Elm Villas, Stroud Green, Newbury. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20^th October.

James after Annie’s death:

James remarried in 1888 (marriage registered in Reading). His 2^nd wife was Emma Buckeridge (nee Mackrell (various spellings))

(Emma was born in Lambourn Berkshire. She was baptised on the 6^th August 1837, in Lambourn, Berkshire, the daughter of Henry and Mary Mackrell (nee Cannons) who were married on the 12^th December 1835, in East Garston, Berkshire. Emma married George Buckeridge in 1860 and had a son Henry George, born 1861. She was widowed in 1885)

In 1891 James (60), Emma (56) and Edith Maud(e) (20), were recorded living at Vine Cottage, Greenham, Berkshire.

The 1901 census records James (70), now retired, Emma (63) and Emma’s grandson George Buckeridge (14), living at Vine Cottage, Greenham Road, Newbury.

James died aged 70, on the 27^th April 1901. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1^st May, with his 1^st wife Annie.

In 1911 Emma (73) was living alone at 3, Poplar Cottages, Jubilee Road, Newbury.

Emma died aged 80, on the 22^nd June 1918 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26^th June.
