George Brunsdon

1809-1881

George, his parents, siblings and early life:

George was born on the 1^st December 1809, he was baptised on the 27^th December 1809, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Charles and Ann(e) Brunsdon (nee Barrett) who were married on the 3^rd July 1795, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

His father Charles was baptised on the 23^rd April 1773, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the son of John and Sarah Brundon. Charles died in 1814, he was buried on the 17^th August, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

His mother Ann was baptised on the 22^nd March 1770, in Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of John and Ann Barrett. In 1841 Ann (70) was recorded as a Nurse, living in Raymond’s Almshouses, Newbury. She died in 1847 and was buried on the 5^th May, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Charles and Ann also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

John Brunsden, born 7^th March, baptised 9^th April 1800

Elizabeth, born 26^th September, baptised 21^st October 1812

In 1815 George (5) was living in Brunsden’s Court, Northcroft Lane, on the west side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with his mother Ann (45) and his sisters, Mary (8) and Elizabeth (3).

George in later life:

George married Diana Fawcett on the 10^th June 1832, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury (both were single, witnesses: Elizabeth Brunsdon and John Nalder).

(Dianna Fassett was born on the 25^th May 1799, she baptised on the 2^nd June 1799, at Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire, the daughter of James and Hannah Fassett (nee Hobgood) who were married in 1797 in Shaw cum Donnington (James Fawcett’s surname was recorded as Fasset at time of marriage)

George and Diana had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

George was recorded as a Carpenter on all the children’s baptism records and the 1841, 1851 and 1871 census records. The 1861 census records him as a Carpenter & Joiner Journeyman:

The 1841-1871 census records record the family living in Hereford Place, Newbury.

1841: George (30), Diana (35) and their children Ann Barrett (8), Sarah Ann (6), George Charles (5) and William James (1).

1851: George (42) Dinah (49), Ann (17), Sarah (15), George (14), an Apprentice, William (11) and Albert (7) (surname recorded as Bunsder on ancestry)

1861: George (52), Diana (60) and Sarah (26) a Dressmaker.

1871: George (63), Diana (71), their widowed daughter Anne Lawson (37) an Innkeeper’s Widow and her children, Alice Lawson (8) and Ferdinand Lawson (6).

In 1876 George found himself in trouble with the law, the following appeared in the newspaper:

George Brunsdon, who was found drunk and sleeping in the fire-escape on Thursday night, was sentenced to fourteen days’ hard labour. He had offended in a like manner previously.

George was widowed in 1877, Diana died aged 77 on the 16^th August. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18^th August 1877. (Abode at time of death: Hereford Place)

By 1881 George was living in Raymond’s Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury. He died aged 70 in 1881 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2^nd April (funeral service: St John the Evangelist, Newbury)
