Joseph was born in Berkshire he was baptised on the 25th August 1805 in Enborne and was the son of John and Sarah Bulpit (nee Smith) who were married on the 15th January 1799 at St Mary the Virgin Marlborough Wiltshire.

John and Sarah also had the following children:

William baptised 4th July 1799 at St Mary the Virgin Marlborough Wiltshire

Elizabeth privately baptised 18th August 1801 admitted into the church St Peter and St Paul Marlborough Wiltshire on the 4th June 1802

Martha baptised 22nd May 1808 in Enborne Berkshire

The 1815 census of Newbury records John (44), Sarah (40), William (15), Elizabeth (13), Joseph (9) and Martha (7), living on the east side of the Wash Newbury.

Joseph’s mother Sarah died aged 43 in 1818 she was laid to rest on the 24th May at St Michael and All Angels Enborne. His father John died aged 67 in 1836 he was laid to rest on the 14th May at St Nicolas Newbury.

Joseph married Elizabeth Chater (Cheater) in Speen in 1826 (Elizabeth was born c1800 in Ecchinswell Hampshire).

The 1841 census records Elizabeth (40) living at the Wash Newbury with Alfred (12) and Elizabeth (4) (no record found for Joseph in the 1841 census). Elizabeth gave birth to a son Joseph in 1841 (surname at birth recorded as Bulpitt mother’s maiden name Cheater), baby Joseph died aged 7 weeks he was laid to rest on the 18th September at St Nicolas Newbury.

The 1851 census records Joseph (47) as an Agricultural Labourer living at Enborne Gate Enborne with Elizabeth (51) and their children, Alfred (21) an Agricultural Labourer and Elizabeth (13). Elizabeth died aged 52 later that year.

Joseph remarried in 1852 in Newbury his 2nd wife was Mary Ann Langfield (nee Hamblin, a widow). Joseph and Mary Ann had two children, Edmund born in 1853 and Emma born in June 1855. Mary Ann died just after giving birth to Emma she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th July. Emma died aged 17 days she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th July.

The 1861 census records Joseph (64) living in Enborne Gate working as an Agricultural labourer. His married daughter Elizabeth Collins (23), son-in-law Emmanuel Collins (23), a Machine Maker and his granddaughter Elizabeth Collins (2 months, born 13th February 1861) were recorded living with him.

The 1871 census records Joseph (70) as a Farm Labourer, living alone in Enborne Gate.

Joseph died (age at death recorded as 79) on the 17th October 1879 in the Newbury Workhouse he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd October.
