Mary Ann, her parents, siblings and early life:

Mary Ann was born on the 28th June 1804. She was baptised on the 13th July 1804, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of John and Charlotte Batten (nee Lamborn) who were married on the 28th August 1803, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

Mary’s mother Charlotte was baptised on the 10th October 1773, in East Ilsley, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Deborah Lambourn (nee Joyce) who were married on the 2nd May 1772, in East Ilsley. Charlotte died aged 77 in 1851. She was buried on the 2nd April, at the Lower Meeting House (Independent) Newbury

Her father John was baptised on the 23rd February 1777, at St Michael and All Angels, Enborne, Berkshire, the son of Eleazar and Ann Batten (nee Tibel) who were married on the 18th October 1759, at St Michael and All Angles, Enborne. John died aged 77 in 1853. He was buried on the 7th February, at the Loer Meeting House (Independent).

John and Charlotte also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury:

Eleazer, born 22nd August, baptised 22nd September 1805

John, born 10th February, baptised 13th March 1808 (died aged 2, of measles in 1810, buried 14th April, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Janetta, born 8th June, baptised 1st July 1810 (died aged 16, in 1827, buried 31st May, at St Nicolas Newbury)

 

In 1815 John Battin (40), a Malter, Charlotte (40), Mary Ann (10), Eleazer (9), Genetta (5) and Deborah Lamborn (84), were recorded living in West Mills, Newbury.

The 1841 census records John (65), a Labourer, Charlotte (60) and Mary (30), living in Northbrook Street, Newbury (surname recorded as Batton on ancestry).

Living next door to them was widower Charles Allen (35) a Carpenter and his daughter Elizabeth (4).

Mary Ann in later life:

Mary Ann married her next-door neighbour, widower, Charles Allen in 1841. (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Charles was born on the 10th October 1802, in Newbury Berkshire and was baptised on the 31st October 1802, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Thomas and Mary Allen (nee Hazell) who were married on the 12th October 1797, at St Nicolas. He married Ann Barnes on the 27th November 1825, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. They had the following children baptised at St Nicolas: Ann, 20th August 1829 (died aged 5 weeks, buried 16th September 1829, at St Nicolas). Elizabeth, 8th March 1835 (died 1836). Elizabeth, 22nd January 1837 and Ann, 14th April 1839 (died aged 2, buried 4th May 1841, at St Nicolas). Charles was widowed in 1840, Ann died aged 39. She was buried on the 19th October, at St Nicolas, Newbury).

 

Charles and Mary Ann had a daughter, Jennetta, baptised on the 30th November 1845, at St Nicolas Church.

The 1851 census records Charles (48), Mary Ann (46), Jennetta (5) and Mary Ann’s niece, Mary Ann Batten (18), living in Jack of Newbury Street, Newbury.

By 1861 Charles (58), Mary Ann (56) and Jennetta (15), a Dressmaker’s Apprentice, were living in West Terrace, West Street, Newbury.

The 1871 census records Charles (69) and Mary (66), living in West Street, Newbury.

Mary Ann died aged 74, on the 30th April 1879. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th May.

The 1881 census records Charles (78) and Jennetta (35), a Dressmaker, living at 7 Raymonds Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.

Charles died aged 82 on the 26th November 1884. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd December.
