John his parents and siblings:

John was born in Newbury, he was baptised on the 25th January 1824 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of Benjamin and Mary Wherrell (nee Hayes) who were married on the 13th October 1815 at St Mary Greenham

His father Benjamin Werril was born in Wiltshire he was baptised on the 30th May 1790 in Aldbourne the son of William and Mary (nee Becking(ham)) who were married on the 12th May 1782 in Aldbourne (Surname recorded as Worral at time of marriage). He died aged 76 in 1864 (age at death recorded as 76 in the GRO website and 74 in the NBI), and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th February

His mother Mary was born in Berkshire c 1789 she died aged 55 in 1844 and was buried on the 17th August at St Nicolas Newbury

Benjamin and Mary also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Benjamin was recorded as a Labourer on all the baptism records):

George baptised 16th November 1817

Sarah baptised 11th June 1820

Hannah baptised 7th January 1827

William baptised 27th September 1829

In 1841 his father Benjamin (50), a Brewer’s Labourer, his mother Mary (50) and his sisters Sarah (15) and Hannah (14) were recorded living in Green Man Yard, West Field, Newbury (surname recorded as Kowell on ancestry)

John:

John married Hannah Bailey (born c1820 in Chaddleworth), marriage registered in Newbury in 1845 and they had the following children (all births registered in Newbury):

Harriet 1858

Alice 1862

Kate 1864

 

In 1851 the family were living in West Mills Newbury and John was working as an Agricultural Labourer.  

In the 1861 census the family were recorded living in Back Lane Newbury and John was recorded as a Publican.  In 1871 they were recorded living in at the Borough Arms Newbury. John was working as a Labourer.

In the 1871, 1874 and 1877 Berkshire Electoral Registers John Wherrell is recorded dwelling in a house in Back Lane Newbury

The UK City and County Directories 1766-1946 record John Wherrell as a Beer Retailer in Back Lane Newbury in 1869 and a Beer Retailer in Gas House Lane Newbury in 1876

John died aged 54 on the 10th November 1878 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th November.

In 1881 Hannah (recorded as Ann on ancestry in both the 1881 and 1891 census) was living at 9 Gashouse Road Newbury and was a Publican, in 1891 she was recorded as a Beer House Keeper living at 9 Charles Place Newbury.  She died aged 72 in 1893 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd October.
