Mary Ann Allen
1801-1877
Mary, her parents, siblings and early life:
Mary was born on the 10th November 1801, Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 26th February 1802, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Lazarus and Jane Andrews (nee Tegg) who were married on the 2nd March 1790, in Thatcham, Berkshire.
Mary’s father Lazarus was born in Greenham, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 3rd February 1770, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of William (of the parish of Thatcham) and Ann Andrews.
Her mother Jane was baptised (as Jenny) in 1768, in Chieveley, Berkshire, the daughter of James and Jenny Tegg.
Lazarus and Jane also had the following children:
Hannah, baptised in 1790, in Chieveley
James, baptised in 1792 in Greenham
Ann, baptised in 1794 in Greenham
Mary, born 28th January, baptised 13th February, 1797, at St Nicolas, Newbury (died aged 1, buried 9th August 1798, at St Nicolas, Newbury)
Jane, baptised 31st January 1800, at St Nicolas, Newbury
John, born 29th May, baptised 25th December 1803, at St Nicolas, Newbury (died aged 3, buried 30th March 1807, at St Nicolas Newbury)
Martha, born c1804.
U.K. Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Admissions and Discharges 1715-1925 records: Lazarus Andrews: Pension date: 29th July 1814. Regiment: Capt. Turners Compy. Discharge date: 30th July 1814.
The 1815 census of Newbury records Mary (13), living in Ch’s Yard, on the west side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire with her mother Jane (45), her sister Martha (11) and a John Gregory (40). Lazarus was not recorded on this census but a note recorded “Husband a Pensioner”
Jane died aged 57 in 1825. She was buried on the 20th July, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury
As Lazarus and Jane were no longer together by 1814, the following records could apply to Lazarus as they record that Lazarus was in a relationship with Lydia Webb, having children between 1817-1821 before he married Lydia in 1826. Lazarus (recorded as a widower) married Lydia Webb on the 27th January 1826, in Kingsclere, Hampshire
Lazarus and Lydia had the following children:
George, baptised 4th May 1817, in Newtown (abode, Greenham)
Sophia, born 18th March 1819, baptised 29th July 1821 in Kingsclere (abode, Headley Common)
Harriet, baptised 26th July 1821, in Kingsclere (abode, Headley Common)
Charles, 22nd July 1827, in Kingsclere (abode, near Newtown)
Mary in later life:
Mary married John Allen on the 16th October 1824, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. Witnesses were Samuel Purdue, Thomas Edmonds, William Durbridge and Martha Andrews.
(John Allen was born c1795 in Woodspeen, Berkshire).
John and Mary had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:
George, 28th August 1825
William, 10th February 1828
Joseph, 5th September 1830
Charles, 17th February 1833
Thomas, 7th June 1835
Emma, 28th January 1838
Sophia, 29th November 1840
Mary Ann, 30th April 1843
The 1841 census records John (40), an Agricultural Labourer, Mary (40), Charles (8), Thomas (6), Emma (3) and Sophia (9 months), living in Northbrook Street, Newbury
In 1851 John (52) a Labourer, Mary (57), Charles (18), Thomas (16) and Emma (13), were living in Temple Place, Speenhamland, Berkshire
The 1861 census records John (62), an Agricultural Labourer, Mary (60) and a lodger, George Allum (27), a Brewer’s Labourer, living in Hasell’s Yard, Speenhamland.
In 1871 John (72), a Labourer, Mary (69) and a lodger, Richard Jennings, were recorded living in Speenhamland, Berkshire.
Mary was widowed in 1871, John died aged 73, he was buried on the 7th June, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.
Mary died aged 73 in 1877. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st January.
