George, his parents, siblings and early life:

George was baptised on the 16th July 1826, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of William (a Millwright) and Sarah Allen (nee Jordan) who were married on the 23rd October 1820, at St Mary, Speen, Berkshire.

His father William was baptised on the 10th March 1799, in Speen Berkshire, the son of Thomas (a Millwright) and Mary Allen.

His mother Sarah was born on the 29th December 1799, she was baptised on the 7th February 1800, in Devizes, Wiltshire, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Jordan (nee Goodman) who were married on the 29th November 1791 at St John, Devizes (Sarah was from Bishops Cannings)

George’s siblings were:

Eliza, baptised 18th January 1824, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Mary Ann, baptised 22nd February 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Charles, born on the 21st June 1831, baptised 10th July 1831, at the Methodist Church, Northbrook Street, Newbury,

Henry, born c1835

Sarah, born c1838

Emily, born 1840

Alfred, 1842

The 1841 census records William (40) as a Millwright, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury with Sarah (40) and their children, Eliza (15), George (14), Mary Ann (12), Charles (10), Henry (6), Sarah (3) and Emily (1).

George’s father William died aged 49 in 1848 and was buried on the 30th December at St Nicolas, Newbury

In 1851 George’s mother Sarah (51) was living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with her children, Charles (19), a Miller, Henry (16), a Painer, Sarah (14), Emily (11), Alfred (8) and a lodger, Frederic Walker (21) a Painer. In 1861 she was living in Northbrook Street, Newbury. The 1871 census records her living at 2 Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury. She continued to live there until her death aged 93 on the 14th May 1893. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th May

 

George in later life:

George was a Millwright. He married Sarah Goodchild in 1848 (marriage registered in Wantage)

They had the following three children, all born in Newbury:

Esther Sophia, born 1851

Eliza, born 1853

William Goodchild, born 1854

 

The 1851 census records George (24) living in Prospect Place, Newbury, with Sarah (33), Esther (1 month), his widowed mother-in-law Sophia Goodchild (60) and his Sarah’s sister Elizabeth Goodchild (20).

George and Sarah’s daughter Eliza died aged 4 in 1857. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th June.

The 1861 census records George (34) as a Journeyman Millwright, living at 6 Maderia Place, Newbury, with Sarah (43), Esther (10) and William (6).

Their daughter Esther Sophia died aged 17, in 1868, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th September.

The 1871 census records George (44), Sarah (52), their son William (16) a Tinman and a niece, Laura Tucker (4), living at 6 Maderia Place, Newbury

George died aged 50 at home (Maderia Place) on the 17th August 1876. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st August.

In 1881 George’s widow Sarah (65) working as a Domestic Servant, she was living in Carnarvon Terrace, Newbury, with a widow, Ann Horsman (68).

Sarah died aged 66 in 1884, she was buried on the 18th March, at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington.
