Jemima Purcell

c1803-1876

Jemima was baptised on the 3rd June 1803, in Kingham, Oxfordshire, the daughter of John and Sarah Andrews (ne Holtom) who were married on the 14th April 1800, in Kingham, Oxfordshire.

John and Sarah also had the following children baptised in Kingham:

Hester, 9th April 1801

Ann, 27th September 1807

Charles, 28th May 1812

David, 20th May 1821

Jemima married John Pursell on the 27th February 1826, in St Marylebone, Middlesex (both were single)

They had the following three children baptised in St Marylebone:

Jemima, born 9th May, baptised 30th May 1828

Charles, born 8th July, baptised 26th July 1829

Rebecca, born 24th April, baptised 13th May 1832

In 1841 Jemima (38) and her daughter Jemina (13), both female servants, were recorded living in Upper Harley Street, Cavendish Square, St Marylebone, working for an Irishman, (2nd Baronet), Sir Henry Martin (67) and his family.

In 1851 Jemima (46) was working as a Cook, at Perry Hill Cottage, Perry Hill, Worplesdon, Surrey, for Harriet Maria Gifford (53) (wife of Robert Gifford 1st Baron Gifford). Jemima’s daughter Rebecca (19) was also working there as a Housemaid. Also among others in the household was a Butler, James Wells (55).

Jemima was widowed by 1861. (Possible death for John in 1858. John aged 52, death registered in Marylebone)

In 1861 Jemima (56) was working as a Housekeeper, at 3, Montague Place, Newbury, Berkshire, for a James Wells (65), a Fundholder (James Wells was formerly the butler recorded in the 1851 census above) Also recorded in the household was a visitor, Humphrey J. Stark (6). Humphrey was Jemima’s grandson, her daughter Jemima’s son. (Jemima was recorded as Jamima Parsell on ancestry)

The 1871 census records Jemima (66) as a Domestic Servant, she was still working for James Wells, at 3, Montague Place, Newbury. (Surname again recorded as Parsell on ancestry)

Jemima died aged 73 in 1876, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th April.
