Kate Geater
1869-1873
Kate was born in the Newbury Workhouse, on the 7th April 1869, the illegitimate daughter of Isabel Geater.
Her mother Isabel was born c1854, in Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of David and Elizabeth Geater (nee Vince) who were married in 1847 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury).
Kate’s grandparents also had the following children:
Jane, c1847 (possibly born before her parents married. Mary Jane Vince birth registered in the Sept. quarter 1847)
Eliza, c1849 (died 1849)
Sarah, 1850
Frank, c1856
Alfred, 1857
Henry James, 1860
Rose, 1863
In 1861 her mother Isabel (8) (recorded as Esable) was recorded in living in Greenham, with her father David (36), a Bricklayer, her mother Elizabeth (36), her sisters, Jane (13) and Sarah (11) and her brothers, Alfred (4) and Henry George (1) (recorded as Henry James).
The 1871 census records Kate (1) living in Albert Place, Newbury, with her grandfather David (45), a Journeyman Bricklayer, her mother Isabel (20), her uncles, Alfred (14) and Henry George (11) and her aunt, Rose (7). (Kate was mistakenly recorded as David’s daughter, she was the illegitimate daughter of Isabel Geater).
Kate died aged 4, on the 29th October 1873, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th November.
Kate’s mother never married. In 1881 Isabel (30) was working as a Parlourmaid at 80, Lower Grosvener Street, Hanover Square, Chelsea.
By 1934 Isabel and her sister Rose Titcombe were living at Woodleigh Cottage, Oatlands Road, Shinfield, Berkshire.
Isabel died aged 82, on the 15th February 1936. She was buried at St Mary’s Cemetery, Shinfield, Berkshire.
