Sarah Church

Sarah was born in Chieveley, Berkshire, she was baptised in 1812 in Chieveley, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Painting (nee Taylor) who were married in 1810, in Chieveley.

Thomas and Elizabeth also had a daughter, Martha, baptised in 1818 in Chieveley.

Sarah had an illegitimate daughter, Ellen Painting baptised in 1832 in Chieveley, Berkshire.

She married Daivd Church on the 2nd February 1833 in Chieveley, Berkshire. Witnesses Joseph Clark and Sarah Clark.

(David was baptised on the 17th September 1809, in Welford, Berkshire, the son of Robert and Ann Church (nee Palmer) who were married on the 5th June 1809, at Wickham and Hoe Benham, Berkshire).

David and Sarah had the following children:

In 1841 David (25), an Agricultural Labourer, Sarah (25) Amelia (2) were living in Long Lane, Thatcham, Berkshire. Ellen Painting (9) and Emily Church (6) were recorded living with their grandparents Thomas and Ann Painting and aunt, Martha painting (20), in Chieveley, Berkshire.

The 1851 census records David (40) as a Labourer living in Oare, Berkshire, with Sarah (39), Ellen (19) a Farm Servant, Emily (16), Amelia (12), Elizabeth (9), Thomas (6) and Edwin (2).

In 1861 David (48) (recorded as Daniel), an Agricultural Labourer, Sarah (48), (recorded as Saley), Ann (22) (Amelia Ann) a Servant, Elizabeth (17), a Servant, Thomas (14) a Shoemaker’s Apprentice, Edwin (10) (recorded as Edward) and Ralph (6), were living in Nutley Yard, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

The 1871 census records Sarah (50), as a Charwoman, living at 6 Mayor’s Lane, Newbury, with her children, Amelia Hose (30) a Laundress, Thomas (23) a Shoemaker and Edward (20) an Agricultural Labourer.

By 1873 Sarah was living in Greenham, Berkshire. She died aged 60 in the Newbury Workhouse on the 3rd March 1873. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6thMarch.
