Charles Allen
1831-1872
Charles, his parents, siblings and early like:
Charles was born on the 21st June 1831, in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 10th July 1831, at the Methodist Church, Northbrook Street Newbury, the son of William (a Millwright) and Sarah Allen (nee Jordan) who were married on the 23rd October 1820, in Speen, Berkshire.
His father William was baptised on the 10th March 1799, in Speen Berkshire, the son of Thomas (a Millwright) and Mary Allen.
His mother Sarah was born on the 29th December 1799, she was baptised on the 7th February 1800, in Devizes, Wiltshire, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Jordan (nee Goodman) who were married on the 29th November 1791 at St John, Devizes (Sarah was from Bishops Cannings)
Charles’s siblings were:
Eliza, baptised 18th January 1824, at St Nicolas, Newbury
George, baptised 16th July1826, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Mary Ann, baptised 22nd February 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Henry, born c1835
Sarah, born c1838
Emily, born 1840
Alfred, 1842
The 1841 census records William (40), as a Millwright, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury with Sarah (40) and their children, Eliza (15), George (14), Mary Ann (12), Charles (10), Henry (6), Sarah (3) and Emily (1).
Charles’s father William died aged 49 in 1848 and was buried on the 30th December at St Nicolas, Newbury
The 1851 census records Sarah (51), living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with her children, Charles (19), a Miller, Henry (16), a Painer, Sarah (14), Emily (11), Alfred (8) and a lodger, Frederic Walker (21) a Painer.
In 1861 Sarah was living in Northbrook Street, Newbury. The 1871 census records her living at 2 Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury. She continued to live there until her death.
Sarah died aged 93 on the 14th May 1893. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th May.
Charles in later life:
Charles married Eliza Burton in 1855 (marriage registered in Newbury)
(Eliza was baptised in 1833 in Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of Joseph and Hannah Burton (nee White) who were married on the 24th November 1806, in Greenham).
The 1861 census records Charles (29) as a Mealman and Baker living in Market Place, Newbury, with Eliza (27) and their son Charles Burton aged 3.
The 1871 census records Charles (39) (mistakenly transcribed as 30 on ancestry) as a Baker, living at 15 Market Place, Newbury, with Eliza (37) (recorded as Elizabeth) and their son Charles Burton aged 13.
Charles died aged 40 on the 9th February 1872. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th February.
Eliza after Charles death:
Eliza remarried in 1875. Her 2nd husband was widower, John Gould.
In 1881 Eliza (47) was recorded living in Craven Steet, Newbury, with John (56) a Grocer and Provisions Merchant, his daughter Phoebe (19) and a servant.
Eliza died aged 47 on the 10th April 1881. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th April with Charles.
