James Haines

c1804-1870

James was born in Wallingford Berkshire, he was baptised on the 20th May 1804 at St Mary, Wallingford, the son of Joseph and Mary Haines (nee Anderson) who were married on the 26th October 1797, in Wallingford.

Joseph and Mary also had the following children baptised at St Mary, Wallingford:

Joseph Haynes, 20th July 1800

Elizabeth Hains, 14th November 1802

Fanny Haines, 15th April 1807

Ann Haines 28th May 1809

Richard Haines, 15th December 1811

Mary Hains, 16th March 1817

Thomas Hains, 7th May 1819

James married Jane Strange on the 13th July 1832 at St Mary, Streatley, Berkshire. James was from Tilehurst, Berkshire. Witnesses: Harriett Goodling and James George.

(Jane was baptised on the 15th November 1807 at St Mary, Reading, Berkshire, the daughter of John and Hannah Strange (nee Knight) who were married on the 16th January 1803, in Whitchurch, Oxfordshire.)

The 1841 census records James (30) as a Servant, living at Early Court, St Mary, Reading, Berkshire.

In 1851 James (46) was recorded as a Publican, (The Horn, St Mary Butts) living in St Mary’s Butts, Reading, Berkshire with Jane (46).

The following appeared in the local paper in 1853

 

Reading Mercury

Dated 10th December 1853

On Wednesday, the license of the Horn, St Mary’s Butts, was transferred from James Haines to Thomas Ellen.

The 1861 census records James (50) as a Cellarman, living at 3 Railway Terrace, Newbury, Berkshire.  Jane was not home when this census was taken. There was also a lodger, Anne Taylor (52) recorded living in the household.

Jane died aged 65 on the 13th December 1868, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th December.

James died aged 67 on the 26th November 1870, he was laid to rest with Jane on the 29th November.

Probate: HAINES James      Effects: under £200       21st December 1870      Letters of Administration of the Personal estate and effects of James Haines late of Vine Cottage Clayton’s-yard Cheap-street Newbury in the County of Berks Wine Merchant’s Cellarman a Widower deceased who died 26th November at Vine Cottage aforesaid were granted at the Principal Registry to Ann Plumridge (Wife of Daniel Plumridge) of Acorn-street Camberwell in the County of Surrey the Sister and one of the Next of Kin of the said Deceased she having been first sworn
