Benjamin Whitehead Payne was baptized on 19 January 1834 at St Mary in Thatcham, the son of Benjamin, a cabinet maker, and Harriet. He married Ann Wheeler in 1859 in Newbury district. Annie was baptized on 28 July 1833 at St Mary the Virgin in Chieveley, the daughter of William, a labourer, and Martha.
In the 1861 census Benjamin and Ann were recorded living in Garland’s Yard, St Mary’s Hill in Newbury, Benjamin was a chair maker.
Benjamin and Ann had five children, all born in Newbury, Emma (1862), John (1864), Martha (1866), Ann or Annie (1870) and Benjamin (1870).
The eldest child Emma died on 27 July 1870 aged 7 years and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 28 July. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 4 August 1870 as below.
July 27, at Mack Lane, Newbury, Emma, daughter of Mr. Benjamin Payne, aged 7 years.
Just weeks later youngest daughter Annie died on 16 August 1870 aged 22 months and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 August. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 18 August as below.
Aug. 16, at Back Lane, Newbury, Annie, daughter of Mr. Benjamin Payne, chairmaker, aged 1 year and 10 months.
In the 1871 census Benjamin and Ann along with the three surviving children were living in Back Lane in Newbury with Benjamin a chair maker. Ten years later in the 1881 census the family were still living in Newbury but by the time of the 1891 census Benjamin and Ann with daughter Martha were living in Gloucestershire. Benjamin and Ann were both recorded in the Westbury on Trym workhouse in the 1911 census.
Benjamin and Ann were buried in Greenbank Cemetery in Eastville near Bristol on 5 July 1918 and 30 October 1914 respectively.
