Sarah Seymour 1795-1870  and Henry Seymour 1796 - 1882

Sarah, her parents, siblings and early life: Sarah and her twin sister Mary were born on the 23rd September 1795 in Newbury Berkshire, they were baptised on the 21" October 1795 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughters of Richard and Catharine Brunsdon (nee Brown) who were married on the 14th September 1789 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Eliza born 6th December 1797, baptised 3rd January 17981 (married Edmund Seymour (Henry Seymour's brother) in 1832)

Martha born 20th April 1802 baptised 15th May 1802

Father: Richard born c1765, (place unknown), died aged 46 in 1811, buried 7th June at St Nicolas Newbury.

Mother: Catherine baptised 9th November 1768 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of Jahr and Mary Brown. Died aged 62 in 1830, buried 23rd July at St Nicolas Newbury.

1815 census of Newbury: Catharine (47), a Shopkeeper, living in Brunsdon's Yard on the west side of Market Place Newbury with her children, John (25), twins: Sarah and Mary (19) and Maria (15). Also recorded in the household, Barnabas Brough (19).

Sarah married twice,

1st husband George Batten. Married 18th October 1819 at St Marylebone Westminster Middlesex.

2nd husband Henry Seymour. Married 19th April 1830 at St Andrew Holborn London. (witnesses: Henry's brother Edmund Seymour and his sister Harriet Seymour )

Henry Seymour
He was born on 10 July 1796 in the parish of Speen and baptised on 30 March 1798 in the Newbury Upper Meeting House (Presbyterian). His parents were Henry and Sarah Seymour (nee Betteridge).

Henry and Sarah's children (baptised at St Mary the Virgin Marlborough Wiltshire):

Catharine Brunsdon 28/12/1831 (Catherine married a Wentworth and died in 1904. )

Charles 5/2/1833 (died 1833 buried 22/4/1833)

Mary 3/12/1834 (died 1840)

Emily l3/3/1836. (In September 1858 his youngest daughter Emily married William George Adey, a member of the well-known Newbury family of timber merchants and builders, and who became Mayor of Newbury in 1874 and 1875.)

(Henry also had an illegitimate son, Henry Seymour Barley baptised on the 1e May 1820 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, mother recorded as Mary Barley, father recorded as a Tallow Chandler)

1841 census   Henry was living, aged 44, in The Green, Marlborough with his wife Sarah, his daughters Sarah (age 14), Catherine Brunsdon (age 9) and Emily (age 5); his occupation was Tallow Chandler and employer.

The business is recorded in the 1830 Pigot's Directory, 1839 Robson's Directory and the 1842 Pigot's Directory operating in the Marsh. In 1843 he was elected a Guardian of the Marlborough Union. I

1851 he had moved to the High Street.

9 November 1855 he was unanimously elected Mayor of Marlborough.
1861, Henry and Sarah were still living in the High Street (variously Candle Maker/Employer/Town Councillor) and at some point they moved to Newbury.

Sarah died on 26 July 1870 at 2 Enborne Villas at the age of 74 and she was buried on 1 August 1870.

DEATHS —July 26, at No.2 Enborne Villas, Newbury, Sarah, the beloved wife of Mr. Henry Seymour, late of Marlborough, aged 74.

1871 he was living, by now retired, at 10 Shaw Crescent where he died aged 85 years on 27 April 1882. He was buried on 3 May 1882 in the same vault as his wife Sarah.

Probate was granted to his nephew Henry Seymour, Wine Merchant of Broadway. Speenhamland. His nephew Henry was the son of his brother James Betteridge Seymour, Draper at 14 Bartholomew Street (1794-1871).

There were four brothers:

Edmund Seymour, Saddler and Harness Maker, Broadway, Speenhamland (1798-1875);

George Seymour (1799-1822);

 James Betteridge Seymour (1794-1871)

and Henry Seymour (1796 - 1882)
