Eliza Creighton
c1816-1870
Eliza was baptised on the 22nd September 1816, in Great Shefford, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Brown (nee Wiltshire) who were married on the 20th October 1814, at St Thomas, East Shefford, Berkshire.
William and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised in Great Shefford:
George, baptised 28th March 1819
William, baptised 20th July 1828
James, baptised 27th February 1831
Charles, baptised 14th July 1833
Maria, baptised 7th February 1836
(They possibly had some of the following children but there was another couple, William Brown (from Shefford) and Elizabeth Head who were married in 1813 in Chaddleworth who lived in Great Shefford after they married, who could also be their parents)
Harriet, baptised 19th March 1815
Mary, baptised 4th January 1818
Isaac, baptised 23rd September 1821
Ann, baptised 11th January 1824
Eliza gave birth to two illegitimate children, Henry, who was baptised in 1836 and Ann, who was baptised in 1840, both baptised in Great Shefford.
The 1841 census records Eliza (20), her two children, Henry (5) and Ann (0) living in Great Shefford, with Eliza’s parents Wiliam (45), an Agricultural Labourer, and Elizabeth (45) and her siblings, George (20), William (12), James (9), Charles (7) and Maria (5 ½).
Eliza married William Creighton on the 15th February 1842, in Thatcham, Berkshire.
(William Watson Creighton was baptised on the 29th November 1801 in Stanwix Cumberland, the son of Walter and Ann Creighton (nee Watson) who were married on the 26th December 1793, in Stanwix, Cumberland).
William and Eliza had the following children:
Mary Ann 1842, in West Shefford
Adam Dobey 1844, in Donnington, baptised in Greenham in 1844
Eliza Ann, 1846, in Donnington
Walter, 1849, in West Shefford
William James, 1851, in West Shefford
Emily Ann 1854 in West Shefford
Ernest George, 1860, in West Shefford
Annie Louisa c1868, in Newbury
The 1851 census records William (48) as a Miller, living in West Shefford, with Eliza (33) Ann (11), (surname recorded as Creighton) Mary Ann (9), Adam Dobie (6), Eliza Ann (4) and Walter (1)
In 1861 the family were still living in West Shefford, as follows: William (57), a Miller and Farmer of 100 acres, employing 4 men and 3 boys, Eliza (40), Ann (20), Eliza Ann (14), Walter (11), William James (9), Emily Ann (6) and Ernest George (1). Eliza’s son Henry Brown (16) was recorded as a Plough Boy, lodging at Ashridge, Newbury Road, East Ilsley, Berkshire, with a Jacob Decon (42) and his family.
Eliza died aged 54, on the 12th June 1870, in West Fields, Newbury (cause of death: Carcinoma Uteri). She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th June.

Eliza’s children, Walter (20), a Groom, William James (18), an Agricultural Labourer, Emily (16), a Domestic Servant, Ernest George (11) and Ann Louisa (3) were living at 1 Wither’s Yard, Newbury, with their married sister Mary Ann Williams (25), a Dressmaker and her son John Walter (1).
