Thomas Stone

c1798-1870

Thomas was born in Manchester, Lancashire. He was baptised at St Mary, St Denys and St George, Manchester on the 20thMay 1798, the son of John and Maria Stone (nee Consterdine) who were married on the 28thFebruary 1797 at Manchester Cathedral.

Thomas, a Brush Maker, married Anne Whittaker on the 11thJuly 1819, at St Mary, Manchester.

Thomas and Ann had a daughter Maria born on the 3rdMay 1820, in Manchester (Dad recorded as a Brush Manufacturer).

By 1829 the family had moved to Holborn, Middlesex, where Maria aged 8, was baptised on the 8thFebruary 1829, at St Andrew, Holborn.

Thomas was widowed in 1829. Ann died aged 30, in Islington, she was buried on the 6thSeptember, at Spa Fields, London. (Denomination: Countess of Huntingdon’s Connexion)

Thomas remarried on the 21stDecember 1829, at St Mary, Islington. His 2nd wife was a widow, Mary Ann Burrows (nee Axton).

(Mary Ann Axton was born on the 7thDecember 1808, she was baptised on the 6thSeptember 1809, at St Andrew, Holborn, the daughter of John and Sarah Axton (nee Medcraft) who were married on the 31stDecember 1798, at St James Clerkenwell, Islington. Mary Ann married John Burrows on the 10thJune 1827, at St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex.  They had a son John Burrow baptised on the 15thNovember 1829, at St Andrew, Holborn. Mary Ann was widowed in 1829, her husband John died aged 23, he was buried on the 16thJuly, in Holborn St, London, before his son was baptised)

Thomas and Mary Ann had the following children:

James Benjamin, born 16thDec. 1830, baptised 9thJan. 1831, at St Andrew, Holborn. (dad a Brush Maker, abode, Garden Street)

Amelia, baptised 30thOct. 1831, at St Leonard, Shoreditch. (Dad a Brush Maker, abode, City Road)

Maria, baptised on the 24thMay 1835, at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire.

Frederick, born c1838 in Greenham, Berkshire.

Sarah, born c1843, in Newbury

Mary Ann, born c1844, in Newbury

The 1841 census records Thomas (40), a Brush Maker, Mary (30) and their children, John (Burrows, now known as John Stone) (15) a Shoemaker’s Apprentice, James (10), Maria (6) and Fredrick (4), living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

In 1851 Thomas (53) was recorded as a Brush Maker, employing 2 men and 3 boys, living at 35 Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Mary (42), and their children, James (20), Maria (15), Frederick (13), Sarah (8) and Mary Ann (7).

The 1861 census records Thomas (63), a Brush Maker, Mary (52) and their two daughters, Sarah (19) and Mary Ann (17), living at 35 Northbrook Street, Newbury.

Thomas died aged 72, on the 20thFebruary 1870. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26thFebruary. (His son-in-law, George Outon Lockeyear (died 1st Jan. 1915) and his daughter, Sarah Lockeyear (died 16th Feb. 1919) were both laid to rest with Thomas in the Newtown Road Cemetery) 

The 1871 census records Mary (53) as a Retired Brush Maker, living at living at 26, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Probate: STONE Thomas Effects: under £100      13th April 1870     The Will of Thomas Stone late of Newbury in the County of Berks Brush Maker deceased who died 20thFebruary 1870 at Newbury aforesaid was proved at Oxford by the oath of Mary Ann Stone of Newbury aforesaid Widow the Relict one of the Executors
