Elizabeth Ellen Allam
1882-1923
Elizabeth, her parents and early life:
Elizabeth Ellen was born in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 3rd September 1882 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas (a Labourer) and Harriet Crook (nee Challis) who were married in 1880 (see marriage details below).
Elizabeth’s father Thomas was born in 1846 in Donnington, Berkshire, the son of John and Hannah Crook (nee Westrip) who were married in 1844 (marriage registered in Newbury)
Her mother Harriet was born in 1855, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 27th May 1855, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Wiliam (a Bricklayer) and Elizabeth Challis (nee Milsom) who were married on the 18th December 1837 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.
Thomas and Harriet’s marriage details:

Date: 25th December 1880
Groom: Thomas Crook, aged 29, bachelor, occupation, Labourer, abode, this parish
Bride: Harriet Challis, aged 24, spinster, abode, this parish
Fathers: John Crook, a Labourer and William Challis, a Bricklayer
Witnesses: Henry Crook and Sophia Crook
In 1881 Thomas (32), a Bricklayer’s Labourer and Harriet (25), a Laundress, were living in Alton Place, Newbury.
Elizabeth Ellen was an only child.
Her father Thomas died (age at death recorded as 35) on the 24th July 1884, in the Newbury Workhouse, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th July
In 1891 Elizabeth (8) was living at 8 Park Street, Newbury, with her widowed mother Harriet Crook (28), a Charwoman, her aunt, Sophia Crook (46), a Laundress and a lodger, Thomas Brown (21) a Bricklayer
The 1901 census records Elizabeth (17) as an Upholsteress, living at 6 Park Street, Newbury, with her mother Harriet (48) a Charwoman and her aunt, Sophia (57), a Retired Laundress.
In 1911 Elizabeth (27) (recorded as Lizzie), an Upholsteress, was again recorded living at 6 Park Street, with her mother Harriet (56), a Charwoman and her aunt, Sophia (67). Also recorded in the household was a lodger, Frank Allam (27), a Cabinet Maker.
Elizabeth Ellen in later life:
Elizabeth Ellen married Frank Stephen Allam (the lodger) later that year.
(Frank Stephen Allum was born on the 8th September 1883 in Abingdon, Berkshire, the son of Edward and Marie Caroline (aka Maria) Allam (nee Fisher) who were married in 1871 (marriage registered in Abingdon)
Elizabeth’s mother Harriet died aged 63 on the 17th June 1917, in the Newbury District Hospital, after an operation. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th June.
The 1921 census records Frank (38) working as a Cabinet Maker & Furniture Remover, for Camp Hopson & Co Ltd, Drapers and House Furnishers, in Northbrook Street, Newbury. He was recorded living at 51 Northbrook Street, with Elizabeth (38) (recorded as Lizzie) and his widowed mother Maria (76)
Elizabeth Ellen died aged 40, (actual age 41) on the 1st October 1923. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd October.
Elizabeth’s husband remarried in 1926, (marriage registered in Wandsworth) his 2nd wife was Ellen Farthing. They had a daughter, born in 1931.
In 1939 Frank, a Removal Foreman, Ellen and their daughter, were living at 11 West Street, Newbury.
Frank died aged 76 on the 16th November 1959, in Newbury.
