Henry John Allen
1859-1940
Henry John was born on the 29th May 1859 in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of Henry and Mary Allen (nee Ba(t)chelor) who were married in 1855 (marriage registered in Newbury)
His father Henry was born on the 5th May 1835, he was baptised on the 31st May 1835 at the Methodist Church, Northbrook Street, Newbury, the son of William and Sarah Allen (nee Jordon) who were married on the 23rd October 1820, at St Mary, Speen, Berkshire. Henry died aged 52 in 1890, in Wallingford. He was buried on the 24th November 1890 at St Mary, Greenham.
His mother Mary was baptised in 1836 in Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of John and Eliza Bachelor (nee Lonon) who were married in 1832, in Reading, Berkshire.
Henry and Mary also had the following children:

The 1861 census records Henry (26) as a Plumber, Painter and Glazier, living in The Folly, Greenham, Berkshire, with Mary (25) and their children, Harriet (5) and Henry (2).
In 1871 Henry (35), a Plumber and Painter, was again recorded living in The Folly, with Mary (35), Harriet (15), Henry (11), William (9), James (7), Eliza (4), Thomas (2), Mary’s widowed mother, Eliza Batchelor (62) and Mary’s brother James Batchelor (29).
The 1881 census records Henry (21) as a Plumber, he was still living in The Folly, with his parents and siblings, William (19), a Plumber, James (17), a Grocer’s Assistant, Eliza (14), Thomas (12) and his grandmother, Eliza Batchelor (72) a Laundress.
Henry married Elizabeth Ellen Martin in 1884 (marriage registered in Newbury)
(Elizabeth was born on the 27th October 1855 in Crofton, Wiltshire. She was baptised on the 25th November 1855, in great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, the daughter of Daniel and Jane Martin (nee Fribbence) who were married on the 16th December 1837, in Bedwyn Magna, Wiltshire)
Elizabeth had a daughter, Rose Elizabeth, born in 1879 in Twickenham Middlesex.
Henry John and Elizabeth Ellen had a daughter Mary Jane, born on the 18th January 1885, in Crofton, Wiltshire.
In 1891 Henry (32) was recorded visiting his widowed mother Mary (53), his sister Eliza (25), a Dressmaker and his brother Thomas (22), in Cul de Sac Road, East Molesley, Epsom, Surrey. Elizabeth and their two daughters were recorded living in The Folly, Greenham.
In 1901 Henry (42), a Painter, was boarding at Chestnut Villas, Long Ditton, Epsom, Surrey. Elizabeth (43) and Mary (16), a Dressmaker, were again recorded living in The Folly, Greenham.
The 1911 census records Henry (51) as a House Painter, living in The Folly, Stroud Green, Newbury, with Elizabeth (54) and Mary (25), a Dressmaker.
The 1921 census records Henry (62) working as a Painter and Furniture Polisher, working for Elliotts, Moulding, Joinery and Furniture Manufacturing, in Albert Road, Northbrook Street, Newbury. He was living at 16 The Folly, Greenham with Elizabeth (65).
The 1939 Register records Henry as a retired Painter & French Polisher, he was again recorded living at 16 The Folly, Greenham with Elizabeth
Henry John died aged 81on the 28th July 1940. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st July.
By 1944 Elizabeth Ellen was living with her married daughter Mary Jane and her husband Herbert Charles Davis, at 56 Greenham Road, Newbury
His widow Elizabeth Ellen died aged 89 on the 19th June 1944. She was laid to rest with Henry John, in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st June. Their son-in-law Herbert Charles Davis and their daughter Mary Jane Davis were also buried with them. (Herbert’s remains after cremation, on the 6th February 1960 and Mary the 12th April 1973)
