ELIZA DALTON nee Rose Ref: 2363
Eliza was born near Droxford in Q2 1840 to Charles (Ref: 12344) & Maria nee Sims. Her birthplace does vary in the census records but the villages mentioned are very close together with Upham being the most frequently given.
In 1841, Eliza, aged 1, is living with her mother at her paternal grandparents’ home in East Woodhay.
In 1851, aged 10, she is living with her parents & siblings Sarah, 4, & William, 2, plus a lodger. They are at Mulley’s or Nulley’s Yard, Bartholomew, Newbury.
No record has been found for 1861 or 1871 but she appears in 1881 as Eliza Dalton aged 40. She is married to William Dalton who is 66 & was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire. He is recorded as ”Pensioner Sergeant, East Indies”. They are lodging with the Mortimer family at 14, Ridge Street, Portsea, Hampshire.
No record has been found to date of his birth, their marriage, other census records or his death.
In 1891, Eliza, 50, is living with her father, Charles Rose, at Gladstone Cottages, Argyle Road, Newbury. She is a widow & a needleworker. She is still there in 1901, aged 60, but her father had died in 1897.
In 1911, Eliza,70, is at 4, Raymond’s Cottages, Argyle Road, Newbury with no occupation.
She dies, aged 80, at the beginning of 1921 is buried on 20 January. Her address is recorded as 99, Newtown Road, Newbury, which is the workhouse infirmary.
Further research on husband located his death certificate. He was 76 when he died on 25 November 1885 &, therefore, had been 72 in the 1881 census. He died at 12, Ridge Street & Eliza was present. He died from epilepsy that he had had for 2 years & from paralysis that he had had for 4 months. He was buried at St Mary’s, Portsea on 28 November 1885.
Army pension records in 1848, aged 39, showed that he had been in the Bengal Artillery which was part of the East Indian Army. In 1866, aged 57, he continued to receive a pension from the Lord Clive Military Pension Fund & had been in Madras. His birth place is recorded as St Martin’s, Salisbury.
